YESTERDAY'S STATEMENTS.

Comparing with the returns of Sunday, freight for Hong Kong have fallen considerably, while cargo for porta beyond maintained the average. During the 24 hours ended at 9`a.m yesterday the returns showed only 5,418 tons of general cargo landed here, to which British vessels contributed 2,388 tops

The best returns were registered by the British steamer, Awangchow, from Bag kok and Swatow, which discharged 1,884 tons, and the Daviken, a Norwegian vessel, 1,300 tons.

Vessels passing through Hong Kong carried 14,743 tons for ports beyond, with only 3,250 tons on British steamers. The German vessal, Hessen, bad 7,920 tons, and the Pyrrhus, a British vessel, 3,20 tons.

CAPTAIN MCALLISTER ON AN

-H ECONOMIC, CRIME.”

In the course of an interview with a representative of the New York Jousmat of Commerce, the oil-burning system em- played in American vessels was described as an economic crime by Captain C, A. MaAllister, president of the American Bureau of Shipping. Captain McAllis cer was of the opinion that the fuel could be used to far more advantage in in- ternal-combustion engines and as gaso- line and lubricating oil in the important industries of the country. He believed, that the recent report made by the Federal Oil Conservation Committee presented one of the most stupendous problems that the United States had been called on to solve.

During the period under review, there were 12 arrivals and 10 departures. They were British, arrivals and 3 depar tures; Japanese, 1 arrival and 3 depar He pointed out that the Bhipping tures Norwegian, 1 arrival; Chinese, Board figures for 1925 revealed that arrivals and i departure; Danish, 1 de-10,700,000 barrels of oil were consumed parture; Dutch, 2 arrivals; German, 1 by the Government's merchant hips arrival; American, 1 arrival and 2 do alone.
