One of the cbjects in arranging the dance was to encourage the civilian ele- ment to attend, and this object was well achieved. The ship's company of the Jermes are very desirous of creating a spiri tof co-operation, friendliness and sociability between themselves and the public of Hongkons, and intend arrang- ing more functions of this nature as the season progresses, in order to keep in touch with their friends ashore.
The dance took place in the dining and lounge rooms of the Hotel, these having been transformed into an admirable ball room with an excellent floor. The scene presented was bright and gay by reason of., the attractive scheme of decoration carried out with national flags smaller flags suspended across the dance rooms. Everyone present spent a thoroughly en- joyable time, and although dancing began at 8.30 it was with regret that the 'pro- gramme had to be brought to a "close at : one o'clock. In all there were over 20. dances, including extras.
