The Prince of Wales has found it de sirable, through his private secretary, to set out his attitude in regard to the in- creasing number of invitations he receives to attend public dinners. In recent years His Royal Highness, it is stated, has found it difficult to attend even a mail proportion of the many dinners to which he is invited, and therefore he has divid- ed such functions into three categories. They are (1) dinners which have national or imperial character; (9) those organised by the many bodies with which he has a direct personal connection; and (3) those held by independent societies which exist for the promotion of one particular science, art or trade.
"The number of annual dinners," it is further pointed out, "in the first two categories at which the Frince's presence is, practically speaking, indispensable has increased to such an extent that it is now almost impossible for him to attend those which belong to the third. In that cats- sory too it would obviously be difficult for him to adopt a selective principle. 4 such societies have, from his point of. view, an equal claim on him. He has therefore really decided that for the present he must decline such invitations unless there are very special reasons against doing so."

Surprise in London.
The opinion generally expressed in London is that Mr. Chu, or whatever Government in China he claims to repre- sent, ought to attend to the beard in their own eyes before they talk about the mote in the eyes of other peuple--in this case, Great Britain.
