THE FALLING DOLLAR.
DISTURBING NEWS FOR
FOREIGNERS.
HONGKONG & CANTON ICE CO., LTD.
ANNUAL RTPORT:
LIKELY TO DROP EVEN FURTHER. LOSS "ON THE YEAR'S WORKING.
The drop in the sterling value of the dollar is certainly very disturbing to those Europeans who are in Hongkong on contract terms of service, and especia ly for these only here for a matter of three years or so, and to those about to go Home, either on completion of their contracts, or on leave.
Since Saturday the dollar has dropped 11d, being quoted on demand yester day morning at 14. 9.11/18d., and has dropped no less than 3d since the begin- ning of August. Warse news, however, is that it is likely to slump even further. in the course of the next fortnight.
General Elect.
The general effect of the slump will be
Canton Ice Manufacturing Co, Ltd. for The annual report of the Haagkong &

The report will be presected at the anzual meeting of the shareholders which will take place at the Company's office on Tuesday, November Sad, at noon. The Rey, Father Robert having left the Colony has resigned from the Board of Directors. Mr. T. G. to send prices of imported goods, such as | HONGKONG STOCK EXCHANGE. from Home, etc., up, and it was learned yesterday that already the price of such commodities as whisky has already been increased by $2 to 83 per case. It is anticipated that an increase of some 25 per cent. will be made on other imported articles, or even more. Locally, however, the slump will probably have the effect of bettering local trade, inasmuch as there will be a greater demand for local pro- ducts and less for the imported articles of a similar nature, which will decrease. With the slump causing a decrease in imports, exports will increase, and this will further improve local business
Where the pinch will be, however, is with regard to the purchase of such in ported goods as are not locally manufac- tured, and for which the sterling value.

Again those going Home at this time, and who have been holding on to their savings in local currency, will be badly hit, and stand to lose a considerable amount on the rate of exchange.
The Primary Cause.
The primary cause of the alump is; of course, the weakness in the silver parket, originating with the recommendations of the adoption of the gold standard in India. Further, if the selling of silver in New York, continues there will prob- ably be a further slump in the value of the dollar.
The dollar may in the course of time go back to somewhere around 2, but it scems unlikely that it will ever rise to 2/3, or over, as was the case last summer. The highest the dollar value has attain- ed was 6/2 in 1920, and the lowest drop being 1/64 in 1992. The dollar has fallen below 1/10 thirteen times in the course of the last fifty years, the last decasion be ing in 1913, when it was at 1/9; while in 1914 it was 1/83.

At the October meeting of the Com- mittee of the Kowloon Residents' Asso. ciation; the Committee's attention. was called to certain letters which had ap- peared in the Press. One of these was an old letter urging the re-establishment of the system of semaphore and light signals indicating times of departure of ferries. In view of the 5 minute service during crowded hours it was agreed that there was, no urgent need for the signals. The other letter pleaded for some loud signal to mark the stopping and re-start- ing of ferries during typhoon weather. As it was not found possible to suggest any auch signal which would not inter- fere with the system of maroons used to announce the arrival of the typhoon itself, the Committee decided that nothing more' could be done than had already been donc, on the initiative of the Kowloon Residents' Association, some time ago, namely an agreement between the Ferry Company and the Telephone Company | Company that notice should be given to the Exchanges when the ferries were withdrawn and when they were to be started ngain. During the recent typhoon, operators at the Kotleon ex- change informed some inquirers correctly the time of restarting, but as this ar rangement is not known to everyone, itO LET From 1st NorEBZE, FET
