There are many people in the Far East who play tennis or golf. Dancing is a popular form of recreation: We do, however, meet without surprise ladies and gentlemen who confess that they play neither tennis or golf. Hostesses pro- vide a bridge room at a dance because they know that some guests won't dance, We expect everyone to play bridge. Wa think them uneducated if they do not.
Even the golfers find bridge a relaxa-duty on passage home. tion after their strenuous labour. If you travel on the train to or from Fan- ling you will hear the cry of "Two no trumps" or
Three spades" as often as you will bear remarks about a marvellous drive or a wonderful approach shot. On many afternoons you will see people playing bridge in the Club House at Deep Water Bay. Tin, bridge and golf make quite a nice day's recreation.

ON THE OCEAN,
"Sad indeed is the case of a man or woman who is doomed to take a long sea voyage without the aid of bridge 4 a means of making the time pass quick ly.
The men in Eongkong play bridge in their Clubs and, usually after dinner, in private houses.
The ladies played bridge in their houses during the afternoons in winter and in summer. They play for prizes, they "get up" bridge drives on behalf of charities and they have "regular fours that book dates goodness knows how far ahead.
THE DINNER PARTIES. The trial and tribulation of the hostess in Hongkong is when she feels compelled to invite someone who does not play bridge. She has to produce some futile sort of game like "Minoru" which is very much like the "race game we played in. the nursery.
Some enterprising man is reputed to have made a fortune by persuading Europeans that the Chinese game of Mah Jong' is really a better game than bridge. It is the old, old fallacy that things Chinese are superior to things European because they have been in use for goodness only knows how many centuries. Why can't people judge things or their merits without being swamped Soine- by statements about their age! body once tried to make out that the water clock in Canton"was very wonder- ful but he had no word of praise for a Ford car, yet Heary bas benefitted millions by demonstrating that mass prodaction crables the manufacturer to pay high wages and sell at a ridiculously "Mah Jong" is all very well low price. for children, but bridge is the game for adults.
