JAPANESE VESSEL BRINGS 200 TONS OF CARGO
DIRECT TO HONGKONG.
Two letters, dated October 10th and October 11th, have come to hand from our Swatow correspondent. These confirm the cables which have. already been published in the Daily Press and give some account of the extremist attitude adopted by the Strike Committee at that Port
Nevertheless the situation would now seem to be showing some slight sign of improvement. The Hasan Maru left Swatow on Wednesday without any cargo for Hongkong. The Kaijo Maru, however, which followed her later in the day brought us approximately 200 tons. The Sinkiang, from Shanghai, is due at Swatow to-day and it will be interesting to note what success she has.
A cable from the Naval Authorities on Wednesday says:
"The local Military Authorities published a proclamation yesterday (Tuesday) saying that the strike was to cease, but the Strike Committee hays, issued posters demanding a continuation of the strike."

With regard to these posters, one exhibited in Swatow advises the workers to earn money from the British, but not to allow the British to earn money from them. It is obvious that the Strike Committee de not understand the rules governing trade, or economics, if they think such a lop sided arrangement is possible. Their advice to the workers continues: Do not go to British schools or Churches; do not travel by British ships; do not send cargo by British vessels; do not borrow money from British subjecta

[FROM OCH OWN CORRESPONDENT;]
Swirow, Sunday.
I went over to Swalow this morning and reliable Chinese friends all told me that at a meeting of the Strike Coin- mittee held last night it was decided not to terminate either strike or boycott- to-morrow for the reason that their body had received no instructions on the mat ter from the Central Striks Committee in Canton..
The general opinion is that there will be no change whatever here unless, and until, the extremists who are directing the Strike Committee are forced to clear out or change their tactics. They have fattened on strike and boycott illegalities for so long that they are loath to aban- don their lucrative calling and doubtless also they foresee increased revenue after the departure of the pickets.
