THE CHINA AMATEUR" CHAMPIONSHIP.

Detailed reports of this event are now to hand from Shanghai. Very largely they are concerned with the doings of Messra. Budd and, Blinko of Shanghai, the former as already reported in our columns, being the winner and thus re- taining the championship for the second year in succession.....

The first two players to complete 18 holes in the morning were N. Smith, the captain of the Hongkong interpört team, and R.. Akahoshi, a Tokyo entrant, and it did not seem likely that the res pective scores of 85 and 84 could be greatly improved upon: It was prac tically only at the 18th hole that any conspicuous adventage could be derived from the wind, while putting was extra- ordinarily difficult. Actually nobody was dader 80 in the morning, and only one player succeeded in keeping to this figure, namely, K. M. Cumming

the mail was for Hongkong, and tha remainder for Canton and coast ports. The P. & 0.35 Hantua strived with the Home mail 214 Bues last evening, and letters, papers and parcels will be ready for delivery and collection this morning. Other mails arriving yesterday" were the Porthos from Marseilles and Saigon, by the Karagaza Maru from Shanghai, the Nam Sang from Straits, the Zuchow Shanghai and the Hong Peng from Straits

NELSON DAY CELEBRATION.

Bays the N. Daily News to hand :- Shewan, who had played such brilliant golf for Hongkong, was disappointing, Over the first two holes he took 15, and thereafter never seemed to get or to his game. As a matter of fact, none of the Hongkong players proved a conspicuous success at this stage of the game, Pen- dered and Ferguson with 84. and Smith with 85 being the best, Ferguson, for instance, commenced his game to the tune of 7, 6, 6, 4, and this was sufficient to spoil his chance of a good round.

At the close of the competition Mr.A

B.

G. MacDonald, President of the Shanghai Golf Club, expressed the opinion that this was the finest cham. pionship that they had seen, and ex- tended a warm welcome to the visitors. Mrs MacDonald thereafter presented the cups. Doctoring the Grass,
