It was in view of the return referred to that Hongkong cargo, managed to show zu increase instead of: a "decrease as the case would otherwise have been. The increase amounted to something like 3,000 tons, but freight for ports beyond went down to the extent of over 14,000 tona.

Total 30,947 17 Of the cargo for Hongkong, five British. vessels brought 4,562 tons between them, the best returns being 1,800 tons and 1,347 tans. Of the remaining 8,370 tons in vessels of other nationalities, one vessel returned 7,681 tons. With regard to the freight for ports beyond, this was all car- ried in three vessels, a British steamer had 720 tone, and two vessels under ether flags carried 1,200 tons and 4,362 tons respectively.
