CONSOLIDATION OF AMERICAN

LINES.

FAR EAST LINE AND PACIFIOJ

AUSTRALIA LINE COMBINE.

Consolidation of the United States Shipping Board's American Far East line and Pacific Australia line under the management of Swayne and Hoyt. Inc, is considered a step toward the establish- ment on a permanent basis of this exten- ive freight service, says the Manila Bulletin. The vital importance of the combination of these two services at taches to the fact that Swayne and Hoyt, San Francisco company which has large financial backing, is expected later to purchase the ships in the service now operated for the shipping board. Fur- chase would secure the vessels on this service on a permanent basis.

The formal consolidation of the services. became effective on August 23 with the departure of the West Sequana from San Francisco laden with a full cargo for Japan, China and the Philippines.

This is the first of a fleet of eight modern type freight carriers to be taken over from Struthers and Barry, former operatore of the American Far East Libe. The other steamers involved are the ess Prospect, Fest Carmona, West Chopako, West 1son, Elkridge, Fest Cajoot and West Faralon; comprising a total of approximately 78,000 dead-weight

tons.

The American Far East Line had its beginning about eight years ago under the management of Struthers and Dixon, Inc. In 1991, when that concern went into voluntary liquidation, the line was allocated to Struthers and Barry. A regular service between Los Angeles and San Francisco and the principal porta in Japan, China, the Philippines, Indo- China, Straits Settlements, and the Federated Malay Stafes has been main tained with twice monthly sailinge Amongst the achievementa in the pro- motions of this line while under the management of Struthers and Barry were the inauguration of direct loadings at number of the Philippine outports, which proved of inestimable value to de- velopment of the trade, particularly copra between the islands and the Pacific, coast, and also the routing of vessels from Manila to San Francisco vid Hong- kong only, whereby Manila shippers were given the advantage of a strictly freight service at speed equal to passenger liners; the voyage to San Francisco being negotiated consistently in not more than 23 days from date of departure from Manila.

a service between

The Pacific Australia Line, which has been managed by Swane & Hoyt, Inc., since its inception some seven years ago, maintained with eight steamers, Ier Culera, fest Conob, Monipue, Fest Of the cargo for Hongkong, British falin, Dewey, West Nivaria, Pawlet and vessels brought 12,919 tons, of which the fest Henshaw, totalling in the neigh- best returns were 6,641 tons, 2,560 fans bourhood of 73,000 deadweight tons. and 1,205 tons Of the remaining 435 This line maintains tons this was brought by two vessels of Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco and other nationalities, of which one steamer Los Angeles and the principal ports of caly brought one ton. With regard to Australia and New Zealand with sailings the freight for ports Eeyond, 7,378 tons at intervals of three weeks. From Aus- were carried in two British vessels, oftralia these ships proceed north to which one carried no less than 6,689 tona. Davao, Zamboanga, Cebu and Manila, thus providing an attractive service to Philippine importers of Australian pro- ducts.

Swayne and Hoyt have an- nounced that they contemplate changes in the service to shippers at Singapore, Hongkong and the Philip- pines and that they intend to eliminate calling at Japan outports and Yellow Sea porte in order to give quicker de liveries to consignees in the Philippine.
