BRITISH VESSELS FIGURE WELL.

With only two more arrivals than on: the previous day, 'thers was a con siderable increase in tonnage, as recorded A in yesterday's shipping statement. much improved position was shown in respect of Hongkong cargo, which re gistered an increase of over 4,000 tons. Freights for ports beyond remained much the same, there being only a very slight increase shown. "British vessels showed up exceptionally well. They carried the bulk of the cargo for Hongkong, in fact all but 66 tons; while the greater part of the freight for parts beyond was also-third officer, Taikco If an Ti carried in British vessels.

Mr. F. J. Griffiths, chief officer, Taikoo Fan Yi, is on reserve

TONNAGE AND NATIONALITIES.

The tonnage figures were as under:- Total: 44,314 tons; British vessels: 9,102 tons; Other vessels: 15,212 tona.

Ata.m. yesterday there were 57 vessels in the harbour of which 28 were British. During the previous twenty-four hours fifteen vessels arrived, est., eight British, one French, one American, one Dutch, one Japanese and thres Chinese, The departures during the same period numbered ten, ei, one Japanese, one Dutch and one German for Shanghai, one Norwegian for Chiawangtao, one Chinese for Sha U Chung, one Chinese for Ewang Chow Wan, one British for Amoy, one American for San Francisco, one British for Maji and one Japanese for Keelung. Clearances came to four, vi, one British for Saigon, one Japanese for Singapore, one Chinese for Quinhon and one British for 'Sandakan.

Of the cargo for Hongkong, British the best returns were 7,000 tons of liquid vessels brought 11,0894 tons, of which fuel and 2,530 tons, of sugar. The re- maining 667 tons of cargo for this port was brought by six vessels of other nationalities. With regard to freight for ports beyond, three British vessels carried 7,144 toas, of which 5,804 toss was in one vessel. The remaining 6,690 tona in two ether vessels was made up of returns of 1,720 tons and 3,940 tons.
