DECREASE IN FREIGHT.

With three fewer arrival than on the. previous day, the shipping statement for the twenty-four hours, ended at n yesterday, showed that a considerabla.. decrease-in-freight bad taken place. Cargo for Hongkong dropped by over 4,000.tons; while freight for ports beyond went down by approximately the same amount. The tonnage of the vessels ar riving for the period under review also decreased, the actual figures being.- Total tonnage: 20.121 tons; British tos. nuge, one vessel: 2743 tons.

With regard to the cargo för Heng- kang. the single British vessel arriving did not carry freight, and only had 96 tons for ports beyond. Of the entries made, the highest was 5,600 tons of coal. With regard to freight for ports beyond, there were only three entries, and one Fot threse came to 4,242 tons.

SHIPPING NOTES.

The R. MS. Empress of dría, dựe to leave Hongkong next Thursday morning for Vancouver, rin Shanghai and Japan ports, will not proceed up the river to Shanghai, owing to the cholera outbreak now prevailing in that port, Passengers for Shanghai will disembark at Woosung and proceed by tender.

At the Marine Court yesterday, be fore Lieut.-Commander G. F. Hole, R.N., the master of a fishing junk, who was caught fishing with bright lights in a prohibited area, namely, off A. 96 Buoy in the Northern Anchorage, was fined $10, or ten days' hard labour in default. A fine of $10 was also imposed on the master of junk, who was charged with anchoring his junk in such a manner as to cause obstruction to the Southern Fairway.

The total number of deck passengers entered for the twenty-four hours ended at 9 am, yesterday was 'd, which total was made up by entries of 50 and 15.

The Japanese steamship Alps. Maru, which ran aground in the Scheldt, broke up during salvage operations and sank in the fairway. Two workmen fell from

the bridge into the hold, and were killed. A diver working under the hull, whose oxygen-pipe was broken, succeeded in reaching the surface.

A natice in the Harbour Office, from the Customs Authorities at Tientsin, states that medical inspection on vessels arriving from Canton has been" discon- tinued, both as Tientsin and at Chin- wangtao,
