THE LOCAL CINEMAS.
'MANHANDLED' AT THE "QUEEN'S" THEATRE."
At the Queen's Theatre yesterday, Gloria Swanson, after a long Esencs "from the Hongkong screen, made her re- "Man- The report of the Public Works Depart-appearance, being starred in ment regarding the progress made in the handled," a picture which will be shown building of the Fire Station during the gain to-day and to-morrow. quarter ended June 30th is' as follows;
The contractors, Messrs Trollope & Colls (Far East), Ltd., have made fairly satisfactory progress with the work dur- ing this quarter. The Dès Vaux Road portion of the building is well advanced, and work is proceeding with the fittings in the native kitchens and sanitary blocks.
All the upper storeys to the Connaught. Road portion of the building have been plastered, joinerwork, fixed including glazing-and ironmongery, floor tiles laid to the corridors, and work is being car ried out on laying the wood block floor- ing, plumberwork, and fixing of sanitary goods.
Painterwork is being executed wherever possible as the various trades complete their work Concrete work is proceeding to the floors of the motor rooms over the lift wells, but the completion of the building is being delayed, as the lifts have not yet arrived from England.
The Sim, which was adapted by Frank Tuttle from the Saturday Evening Post story by Arthur Stringer, gives Mias Swanson a wide range of possibilities. She plays the part of a shop girl, who starts life in a New York store. Money, beautiful clothes,, good times have the same appeal to her as they have for the average girl, who has never had them. She has youth and beauty-is clever and attractive, and naturally there are men, who are willing enough to help her to lead the kind of life she thinks she wants. She is caught up in a wild whirl of gaiety a breakneck pursuit of pleasure in the most Bohemian set in the metropolis, only to realise in the end that her free and easy contact with so many men has depreciated her value in the oyes of the men who really loves her.
The picture was directed by Allan Dwan, who has surrounded Miss Swan- son with an excellent cast, headed by Tom Moore. He gives one of the greatest per- formances as the hard-working mechanic, whose honest love wins Gloria in the
The external plasterwork is nearing completion and work is being carried out on the fixing of rain water goods, clean-end- ing the face brickwork and dressing down the granite work.
Tenders were received and a contract was let on May 11th to Mesare. Ein Les &Co., to supply furniture and the special fittings for the laboratories, while further tenders were received and were under consideration at the end of June, to supply furniture for the Offices of the various Departments to be accommodated in the building.
BONHAM ROAD SCHOOL. Satisfactory progress, say the P.W.D., has been made during this quarter and the building is now almost completed. The open playground has been paved, the granite portico to front entrance is near- ly completed and work in connection with the widening of Bonham Road is well advanced. The instalment of water sup ply to the swimming pool is in hand and the lay-out of the masters garder has been commenced.
The fittings to latrine block have been installed, lights and fans throughout the school are being fized, also the locks and fastenings, etc., to doors and windows Furniture contracts have been let.
