SIX FISHERMEN RESCUED
NO FOOD OR DRINK FOR FIVE -DAYS.
-
·HONGYONG SHIFFING. Although there were four more arrivala PICKED UP BY DUTCH STEAMER than on the previous day, the only in- "crease with regard to freight figures was in respect of cargo for Hongkong. which yesterday's shipping statement showed had increased by 8,543 tons, compared with the low Agures of the previous twenty-four hours. Freight for ports beyond had, on the other hand, gona down by 11.758 tons, compared with the figures of the corresponding period, so that the total decrease on all freight of 2,243 tone, only left the Cargo igures- round about the usual average. A satis factory feature of the returns for yer terday was that British easels, num. bering exactly half the arrivals, brought practically half the cargo for Hongkong.
A report, made to the Harbour Office yesterday by the master of the J. C. J. liner Tjipanas," stated that during the voyage to Hongkong he had picked up"six Indo-Chinese fisherman from |Saigon-flabing-boot, and had brought
them to Hongkong.
It appears that the men when rescued had been floating in a junk on the open sen for five days without food or drink.
On Monday the Hongkong office of the line received a wireless message from the Captain of Tjipanas stating that the fishermen were being brought here, and the vessel arrived yesterday morning.
The report of Captain J. Groutes, states that the bont, when sighted ap- peared to be drifting.in a helpless con- dition, 150 miles from the nearest. Tand and about 300 miles from Cape St. James. When taken off the fishing boat, the crew of six were exhausted, and told the Captain of the Tjipanas that they had drifted for Ave days and nights without water or provisions. Their first request when the steamer got alongside was for water and food.
The
crew of the fishing boat were offered provisions to enable them to get back to Saigon, and alternatively were: offered a
the Tjipanas to paisage on Hongkong. The latter effer was 'ne cepted.
Arrangements are being made to re- turn them to Balgon without-the neces sity of transference, as the Tjipanas is bound for Saigon on her next outward trip from Hongkong.

Mr. W. B..Hind, who defended, con- tended that no case had been made out against Capt. Prigent, since the section under which he was charged dealt with the actual offender.
