A very interesting passenger, who ar rived-in Hongkong on the President ferant, and left on that liner yester day evening for Manila, was Colonel Carmi Thompson, of Cleveland, Ohio, who is going to the Philippines as the personal and special representative of President Coolidge to investigate con ditions there.

in the Philippines provides for the W. R. Kermode, second officer,
eventual independence of the Philip pines, and of late there has been con- siderable agitation among the Filippine people that the time has now arrived for complete autonomy to be granted. It is undoubtedly in connection with such agitation that the President of the Unit ed States has instructed Coloniel Thomp- son to carry out the investigation.

Colonel Thompson will leave for the United States again on the President Jefferion on October 28th, arriving home on November 19th. It is expected that his report of the result of his survey will be in the hands of President Coolidge in December. It is also expect ed that the report will be of far reaching importance in its bearing upon the future policy of the United States in Philippine Thlands and in the Pacific generally...
When seen yesterday, Colonel Thomp- son would not say anything beyond state ing that he is going to make as impartial and careful a survey of the situation as he could and take back the results of his work, together with any suggestions he had to make to the President.

has the unusual distinction of having BOARD OF CONSERVANCY-WORKS served three Presidents of the United States. During the Taft administration he served as Secretary to the President, was Assistant Secretary of the Interior, and-Treasurer of the United States. He was a close personal friend and political adviser of the late President Harding, who appointed him a member of the Ad-- visory Committee of the American De legation on the Disarmainent Conference at Washington in 1931. As Chairman of the Sub-Committee on new implements of warfare, be introduced the resolation. which was unanimously adopted, abolish- ing the use of poisonous gasses in future warfare. Col. Thompson is now Chair Tasa of the Ohio Finance Committee of the Republican National Committee..
SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR VETERAN.
Col. Thompson is one of the veterans of the Spanish-American War, and is now serving as Commander in Chief of the United States Spanish War Veterans. These veterans fought in the Philippine insurrection 28 years ago. The Veter- ans' organisation has branches all over the world, and in Shanghai Col. Thomp Bon was given a warm welcome The "camp" at Shanghai consists of 85 mem- bere. There is no "camp" in Hong- kong, but there is one at Canton,

Col Thompson has wide experience of "economic and political affairs, having made a commercial survey in Cuba,
Canada and the United States for the interests associated with the late James J. Hirst. Daring his association with President Taft, Co. Thompson acted as Secretary of State of Ohio' and was Speaker of the House of Representatives "of the State.
On his visit to the Philippines, Co. Thompson is accompanied by his wife, two secretaries, namely Miss Grace M. Jones and Mr. J. LE. Jappe. Mr Jappe was Secretary of the Republican National Committee at Cleveland, and was nominated in 1924 as Secretary of the Ohio Finance Committee of the Re- publican National Committee
