FUTURE TERRORS OF THE AIR, DEVELOPMENT OF CIVILISATION, SIR GEORGE MAXWELL REVIEW
PROBLEMS OF FAR REACHING
IMPORTANOE
The great flight that Mr. Alan Cobham bas accomplished from London to the Cape and back, a journey of sixteen thousand miles through the air, em phasizes the extent to which serial re search has developed and creates pro- blems of far reaching importance to Britsin.
PAST YEAR.
The rubber market made an Excellant recovery during the year (saya bee Chief Secretary's annual report to the F,M.S.) due partly to restriction output and parily to increased netivity in the mater trade, especially in America. The price of rublier opened at 87 cents par Ib., and remained at about this figure until the end of March, when it rose steadily to 81.74 per 1 in the middle of July. rubber industry has had the disadvantage of diminishing the attractions of oil- palm cultivation, it is satisfactory to be able to record that there has been but little tendency on the part of the Malays to neglect the cultivation of their padi

The leading feature of the war in the air will be its amazing rapidity, for we The following estimate of the area un- aru. dealing with forces of destruction der rubber in Malaya in December, 1925, that will more through space with all the has been prepared by the Controller of confidence with which an ocean liner Rubber and the Secretary for Agricul ploughs through the sens, only at no inture. It is only an estimate, but it has Buitely greater rate, and fully cognisant been compiled with care from the figures of its position in the air throughout every at their disposal:- noment of the flight.
The fast bombing planes of to-day, and those now. in, the making, will have en- gines of 800 to 1,200 horse power, able to travel at not less than 300 miles per hour, and moving in the skies at an altitude of 35,000 to 45,000 feet. They will climb at the rate of 1,800 feet in a minute, and in the caas of the single seater plane, when its manoeuvers have placed it in a favourable position 'above the enemy, the terminal velocity in the downward dive will exceed 800 miles per hour, a speed actually in advance of sound itself.
The fighting airplane of the future will resemble the submarine; it will penetrate to heights hitherto undreamed of and to enable the pilot to bear the low tempera- ture and rarefied atmosphere he will wear epecial suit, and be entirely enclosed within the plane, as are the crew of submarine beneath the water.
The immense height at which air planes will fly raises another problem, the question of light. During the next war, attacks will be mainly by night, and we shall need searchlights spreading wide angle beams across the skies and flooding them with light.
But the searchlights will have to passess great powers of, penetration to cope with the altitude at which the enemy aircraft will be operating and already experiments are being made by experts in Britain to evolve light abedding beams that will penetrate to an enormous height, to blind the attacking fores by the power of their rays, and enable the fast single seater defending plance to swoop down and deliver their altack.

LATE EARL OF YPRES. CHILDREN'S TOUCHING TRIBUTE.
Touching scenes were witnessed on a recent Saturday at the village church. yard at Ripple, near Deal, where lie the remains of the late Field-Marshal the Earl of Ypres. It was the anniversary of the great soldier's death, and in the morning children from the St. George's School at Deal, who retain fond memories of the distinguished warrior when he last addressed them on Empire Day, searched the countryside for bluebells, which they gathered and placed on the gravo, with the inscription: few children in remembrance of Empire Day, 1924."
