It has only been possible to mention in detail one of the causes to which Shaftes bury devoted his life, but the specimen is as characteristic as it is honourable. The inscription on Harrow Hill, which talis how the shocking spectacle of a pauper's funeral stirred him as a boy to devote his life to the poor, records an important event in English history, and the day is worthy to be compared to that other day when Mr. John Howard moun- ted his horse and rode off into the neigh- bouring county to see whether there, was any real excuse for letting gaolers make profit out of their prisoners.

It is not unduly fanciful to say that Mr. Howard, the High Sheriff of Bed- fordshire, never returned from that ride, but continued it, as Howard the philan- thrapist, to, the day of his death, just as the Harrow boy of fourteen who was going down the Hill had changed in a moment into the great Lord Shaftesbury whose name will be remembered as long as London stands.--Evening Standard.
