A WEDDING IN TIBET. BRIDE MARRIES ALL SONS OF A FAMILY.
Marriage in Tibet is not the least in teresting of the institutions of that re markable country. As a rule it takes place. only in 'families possessed of wealth and social position According to the Jaws of Tibet, the eldest brother has the prior right to marry, since he inherits the ancestral property. But if there are brothers the wife is shared by them as by so many junior husbands The child ren are regarded as those of the elder brother, the others being considered as` "uncles." As a result of the tedious caremonies, long terms of waiting, and troublesome conditions formal marriage does not take place among the majority of people.
CANADIAN BUSINESS MEN.
TO TOUR THE FAR EAST.
A party of members of the Vancouver Board of Trade plan to visit China and Japan next spring, announceà, the Van- couver correspondent of the M.-C. Daily News They hope to draw closer to gether, hy personal contact, the AX- porters and importers here and the traders of the Far East. It will be the first time in the history of Canada that a trade delegation will have visited the Orient.
No defuite dato for the tour has been set but it is likely that March or April will be chosen. "This excursion is the culmination of many representations that have been made to the board from time to time by chambers of commerce in China and Japan," said Mr. W. E Payne, secretary of the Board of Trade. He added that the Board considered it an opportune time, for a representative delegation of its members to make a study of Oriental trade conditions, and to develop further trade relations kė tween British Columbia and those coun- tries.

FAREWELLS TO THE BRIDE.
The day is Axed some considerable time ahead, as there must be a series of fare- well banquets given for the daughter by her parents. Friends and relatives bring presents to these gatherings, which are kept going for two or three weeks, or even longer, with much cating, drinking, dancing, and general follity. The brida receives new dresses and ornaments, among them presents and ornaments from the bridegroom and his family.
I had an opportunity of witnessing "the marriage of a somewhat important Tibetan official on the principal day, after these preliminaries were over. The pre sence of a European adiled a novelty to proceedings, and the large party gathered at the bridegroom's house made me cordially welcome. Whether the bride- groop had nay brothers I do not know. Although an invited gueat, I thought that perhaps it might not be etiquette to ask

At an appointed time the wedding guests, mounted on ponies, set off on the road to meet the bride. We were a very jolly-party, relatives, and friends of the bridegroom, and the joviality increased at each halting place. Of these six had been prepared beforehand, with plenty of refreshments, liquid and other. jollcat member present was a stout old lama who nearly fell off his pony with laughter at his own jokes, which unfortu nately (or fortunately) I did not under stand. Three of these halts had been prepared by the bridegroom's relatives, and three, by the bride's. We met the other party raidway, which is the proper thing to do. The bride was mounted on a gaily caparisoped steed, her head and face being covered by a thick veil.
