The Wing On case, one of the longest criminal trial in the annals of the Hongkong Law Courts, closed yesterday, but Sir Henry Gollan (the Chief Justice) postponed delivering sentence until this morning.

A CROWDED COURT.

When the hearing was resumed yester day morning, the Sfteenth day of the trial, the Court was crowded with Chinese. All the seating accommodation, where it was possible to hear the Chief Justice's summing up was packed, and a crowd of persons stood all day on both

sides of the dock.

His Lordship began his summing-up at 1.30 am. and concluded at 3.33 pm, He read long extracts from the evidence given by witnesses for the prosecution and the defence.

The jury retired for a brief period, and returned the verdict as stated. His Lord ship will deliver sentence this morning.

THE SUMMING.UP.

In the course of his summing-up, His Lordship dealt with each of the charges against the accused separately. Deni ing with the charge of conspirper, be said that it was only necessary, to prove criminal object on the part of two

or more persons.

Referring to the criticism made by the Counsel for the prosecution that the defence had withheld their case until the last minute, His Lordship said that such a reservation should not be regard. ed as prejudicial to the accused, because prisoners were not bound to make a de- fence before the Magistrate,

Continuing, he said that, on the whole the evidence in the case was circum- stantial, and the onus of proof was un- doubtedly on the prosecution.

Having read the evidence of Chan Saw, His Lordship turned to that of Ho Cheuk Pang, and pointed out that the latter had wholly contradicted Chan's When the jury came Sain's evidence. to consider Chun Sam's statements, they would have to give the closest attention to the material part of Ho's contradic- tion.

Chan Sam had stated that the second accused had confessed to him that the deposit book was forged. The defence had very pertinently asked why such a confession need ever have been made. It seemed very foolish. The jury would have to give very careful conside ration to that point.

Honda played one of the coolest games so far seen, and gave an exhibition of clever short cross-court drives. Remark- Ably accurate in his placing, he made Akiyama run around the court "on many occasions in the third set and showed his real form by "beating his opponent six love by brilliant all round play.

On his performance yesterday, he is likely to win the Open Singles again.

THE "NAM WAH-”

ALLEGED DETENTION NEAR TOURANE.

On the arrival of the ́na Kasura (Chinese) from Tourane yesterday, the master, Captain Y. I. Nicol, reported to the Harbour Office that he carried as passengers the master and 17 of the crew. of the sa Nam Web.(Portuguese). The Nam Wah, he stated, was still detaiñed at Touráne.

It was previously reported that the Nam Wah had damaged her tail shaft and was anchored off the Indo-China' const. Subsequently she was, towed to port by a French steamer..

It is now said that a claim for $25,000 has been made for several hundred miles towage and that the Nain Walt has been delained until the claim is satisfied.

The Tai Bhing Navigation Company, Hongkong, the local agents for the steamer, stated that their ship is not at, but near Tourane. They confirm that she is being detained in connection with the above mentioned claim..
