LOCAL RACING NOTES. SUGGESTIONS FOR BUILDING FENCES.
ENTRIES FOR FANLING.
[DY ARGUS.)
Dr. Pierce-Grove, Clerk of the Course" of the Fanting Hunt Steeplechases, haring asked me for an authoritative opinion regarding the constitution of fences for China ponies, I can quote na better authority than Mr. C C. Boyd.
la 1023, when local owners were keen on the inclusion of steeplechases in the Hongkong Jockey Club programmes at. Happy Valley. I approached Mr. Boyd in order to obtain the views of an ex- pert.
་
Mr. C. C. Boyd, who had ridden in 60 steeplechase in China alone, at the time of the interview, which was pub lished in the China that of Uetohir with, and is partly reproduced hele by kind permission of Mr. G. WC. Burnett, had some interesting things to say about the composition of a steeple chase course for China, ponies.
MR. BOYD'S VIEWS. Regarding the composition of fences, Mr. Boyd said:-
WALLS:-In my opinion the walls should be built of hard riud and should not be less than 2 feet 2 inches, with a topping of hauling (coltou stalks) placed along the centre. The width at the top should be 9 inches, the ditch on the landing side 3 feet 6 inches wide. If the walls are lower that this and have no ditch on the landing side, they h come 4 source of danger.A pony, once having jumped such an obstacle, will realise that it is not necessary for him even to change or alter his stride-the more so as he knows there is no ditch to fall into on the landing side. The consequence will be that he will, as oiten ag not, take off with the wrong leg and land on the wrong oac. The taking off side should be slightly on the incline.
For the benefit of those riders with I would say: limited experience,
Steady your pony about. 6 pr 7 yards from the wall. sit slightly forward on taking off, and straighten the back ns the pony lands so as to be able to help. him to recover, should he stumble ob landing. If no stumble, is likely th can be told by instinct at once re

WATER JUMPS: The take-off should be about a foot higher than the landing The landing edge of the jump should be very clearly cut and care should k tuken that the water does not soak through and make the landing soft. A PUBLIC COMPANY TO BE FORMED. guard of Kauling should be placed in front of the jump.
While the foregoing views of Mr." Boyd do not go very fully into the matter, as regards the water jump or the distance between fences, etc., enquiry from the Hankow Race Club (where Mr. Boyd laid out the steeplechase course, if memory serves), the Shanghai Race Club and the Tientsin Rade Club, should result in sucient data being obtained to satisfy the keenest "seeker after the truth" with regard to what experience has-taught others.
