Young Norman belonged to a business family whose influence in London's com- mercial enterprises was of the first rank. His maternal grandfather, Sir Mark, Collet, was a Governor of the Bank of England in the eighties. As he already showed at school a considerable aptitude for economics, both his father and grand. father used their influence to turn his mind from thoughts of a military career: pointing out (as was often the custom with parents in those days) that the age of great wars had passed, that the future lay with industry and commerce, and that. with his large means and his influence the commercial world great achievements were reasonably within his reach.
Thus, instead of taking the Sandhurst or Woolwich examination, young Norman proceeded to King's College, Cambridge. where he devoted himself, under the late Professor Marshall, to an intensive study of Political Economy, and attended the Mathematical Schools. Beyond a little loating and some cricket, he gave little time to athletics, but was distinctly popu-Hongkong Tramways..... far with all classes of the men at King's Lane Crawfords.... in the early nineties.
