A keen follower of racing writes to ask whether I can give him any data with regard to the difference it would make to the punter if the Eongkong Jockey Club Stewards were to allow bookmakers to operate at the meetings held throughout the year at Happy Valley. He instances 'the presence- al pencillers at the two steeplechase meetings held at Ewanti, under the auspices of the Faaling Hunt, and adds: "Since bookmakers proved an unqualified success at these retings why should they not be allowed at Happy Valley, where continual complaint is made of the cramped prices returned ???

Apart from this, however, the fields on the average are too small to allow any scope to the layer of odds on a course like Happy Valley, where the form of the horses is so generally known.

A BOOKIE'S LIMIT. Curiously enough the machine always pays better prices on outsiders than it would be possible to obtain from a book- maker.

SMALL HOUSE OWNERS.

STEADY INCREASE IN LONDON.

The number of private owners of small houses in London is steadily increasing owing to the Small Dwellings Acquisi tion Act. In the last three years the London County Council have advanced directly over £300,000 for 523 houses. "Ia addition they have sanctioned loans for purposes of advances by Metropolitan Borough Councils for two houses in 1920, 235 houses in 1994, and 285 houses in 1925. Advances have also been" given,. owing exclusively, of course, to the Small Dwellings Acquisition Act, for six houses in 1923, 454 in 1924, and 1,928 in 1925. The total amount of such advances given to persons crecting houses during the last three years by the LC.C. alone amounts to £1,080,000. --
