DEPARTURES.

"On the morning of March 25th," the writer saya, I was awakened by two revolver shots, and looking aft saw four men armed with revolvers and choppers, pushing the captain and the mate into the third engineer's room. Walking aft. which I realize how to have been very foolish, they forced me to put my hands up, which I did in the best einerna style.

Per Dollar liser President Cleveland, There are six foreigners in this ship, and for San Francisco on April 10th: this affair happened when four out of Mr..1. Ariga, Mr. M. Adachi, Mr. and

Mrs. A. Brimo and child, Mr. and Mrs. that number were sound asleep. Con- W. H. Beacon, Mr. and Mrs. C. Bean, sequently it was nothing short of suicide Miss V. Buckland, Mrs. B, S. Bullard for two of that number to offer any real sistance. The navel, and military experts may think differently, bat this is my candid opinion. The mate and third engincer were escorted to the chief en gineer's room, which was searched, and the pirates carried away the rifle and ammunition. The chief engineer asked, his guard at 8 a.m. if he could go down to the engine room to relieve the second

MANCHURIA RAILWAY engineer, which was readily agreed to.

all the passengers' luggage, and carried away anything that was of any value. The officers were fortunate in comparison with those on other ehips in nct having their personal effects stolen.

-THE NUMBER ENGAGED..

"Opinions differ as to the number of the pirates. I saw and spoke to quite a number of them, as they were frequente. ly in the saloon st meal times. The general estimate is between 20 and 25. The ship's compradore estimates that they got away with about 820,000 in money, personal effects, jewellery, and cargo. They were in charge of the ship for over 40 hours, and left in sampa08 with the loot to the notorious seaside resort, Samun, or Bins Bay.

**There were four casualties during the stampede through ricochets, two pirates, one tally man and the second cook all being shot in the leg

This affair was very nicely staged and exerated. There must have been about 400 persons aboard, and they had the ship completely under their control in about half an hour-very humiliating, but the fact remains. The only way to combat this piracy business is a thorough and systematic search of all "the pässen- gers' baggage and personal effects, for without firearms they are" practically harmless. Wireless, Indiai guarda and iron grills will never put this profitable business out of fashion.
