THE WHITE ENSION.

Such are the inspiring traditions to which the Royal Indian Navy is het. With its new designation it takes on new character, or, more properly, reverts to its priginal status as a cumbatant force: The armed transports and auxi liaries, of which it is now composed, at to he joined by vessels of more nounced military type, limited at first to sloops, patral craft, and surveying whips. In course of time, however, we may hope to see cruisers of the most powerful class embodied in the Royal Indian Navy. The red pennant hitherto flown by vessels of the Royal Indian Marine is to be replaced by the White Essigo, an honour which the educated community has been quick to appreciate The functions of the new forer are to be those of an active naval organisation It will perform such duties as the Indian Government may require of it in the ladian Ocean and the Persian Gulf: it will chart the waters of the Indian Ocean, and be responsible for the, naval deferon of all ports under the control of the Government.

Commissioned rank in the Royal Indian Marine has been open to Indians for some years past. None have come forward. however, probably because there were few facilities for naval training. Under the new scheme this defect will be remedied, While the Royal Indian Navy remains at its present strength the number of vocal cits for executive officers will be limited to three per year. One of these appoint ments is to be reserved for an Indian, provided a candidate of suitable qualifica tions presents himself. Indian youths' now at public schools in England may be the first to compete for such appoint alcats, which curry with them the King's commission. Eventually the Dehra Dun military academy is expected to supply cadets for the Navy

BRAVE WAR NURSE'S DISEASE.

The Bishop of London, in dedicating memorial chapel to brave women of the war in Holy Trinity Church, Gray's Inn Road, London, recently disclosed the fast that a nurse who served five years in the war, braved the horrors of Verdun, and a wounded twice, still suffered a terrible disease from a germ that all the all of the best surgeons and medical doctors in the country could not trace or diagnose.

Another case was of a nurse who was on board" three different ships that were torpedoed. On one occasion she was in the water for three hours. She was now suffering from permanent rheumatism.

Recalling a personal experience he praised the heroism of 90 Londor women and girl workers who made bandages for the wounded in the evening after their day's work They were engaged one Hight in their room in Ebury 'Street when a bomb fell and knocked them all

The idea that all inhabitants of India lack the sea instinct is diepted by some authorities. It would be strange indeed if a country with a large mari time population did not produce men with

natural aptitude for the sea and its ways. Natives have, in fact, served in the Indian Marine from its inception. They fill all the positions from Chief Sarang, or Chief Petty Officer, to ship's boy.

Under trusted leaders they havy shown themselves to be zealous and com- petent seamen. Nor need it be doubted that India will be able to provide eficient officers for her own Navy, now that combatant career in this service has been thrown open to her sons.

While it would be premature to speak of the Royal Indian Navy as power- ful factor in Imperial defence, the geographical position of India is such aa to invest say local naval force with a peculiar importance. Should the Empire ever go to war again, the control of the Indian Ocean would become a matter of vital concern. India berself, with an ex- tensive coastline and numerous ports, not easily defended, in which a great deal of her wealth is concentrated, offers a
