Steamers and Traion,

DO YOU KNOW YOURSELF?

SECRET OF THE ROAD TO SUCCESS.

(BY Y. A. MITCHELL-HEDGIES. THE EXPLORER}

Know thyself! A

Such was the advice of ancient philoso phers to mankind. That advice is as appropriate to-day as it ever wan

Bet in this ultra-civilised age, of tur moil and unrest and constant battle in order to live, is it possible to know one- selli

We are surrounded by influences which create an artificial atmosphere and pro- duce among innumerable inen and women a certain mental unbalance.

A fact which.cannot be insisted on too much is that people are created with brains for the express purpose of think. ing. It is imperative they should analyse tacts for themselves; that they should endeavour to know themselves, dissect. their own lives, try to see their faults, and reason out why their efforts have not brought the success they hoped for.

The greatest set of youth in imagina- tion

come

It builds castles in the air. There is unbounded optimism. Again, we see" in youth a splendid egotism. Later, disillu sionment may

and ambitious dreams are shattered. Why?

Because with many it is net only that they do not know themselves, but obstin- ately refuse to. They remain wilfully. blind to their own failings. They have not, the courage to face and correct obvious faults of character and disposi tion while many deliberately try to deceive themselves.

WHY MILLIONS REMAIN POOR.

There are millions to-day who would not be in their present poor circumstances, if they had given just a few minutes to per sonal analysis and faced disagreeable fatts patent to others, bat which they refused to recognise.

if the many destructive traits which combine to make the human complex were self-centred, suffering would be confined to the individual. But unfortunately many take an unholy joy in irritating. olhers

A weakness to which the majority are most prone is criticism. Now there is nothing more helpful in this world than sound criticism backed by a policy of construction.

An avid tongue is the indea of

2 moun

mind.

The harm caused by the mania for mali- cious criticism is beyond caféulation... It is noticeable in all classes that when a man or woman strikes out he cr"she is immediately the target for sarcasm and

snecrg.

As a result innumerable careers have been crushed at their inception. Many people just started in business have fail ed. Initiative has been killed, and many promising young men and women con ilemned to the rut because they have been unable to struggle against the critir- im levelled by those whose one pleasure-

life is to discredit the efforts of others.

PERIL OF EVIL TONGUES.

Now do the people who revel in picking fault, discouraging, and thinking of every possible barrier to prevent 'others from achievement, know themselves? Do they ever consider that they are the "do nothings" of the world that they are the

lesser-brains"?

For, wihout exception, it will be notieed that those who make disparaging remarks about others who have ambition certainly have not the Araias, courage or initiative of the person they are vilifying.

Consider the many homes that have had the seed of discord planted in them by others less fortunate. The secret told in confidence to the wife; the whisper in the car of the man-and so the first cloud arises. Again, the warnings and sugges tions emanate from those who their marital relations not being a success find it call and wormwood to see others happy. They never stop to consider the trouble they are causing. They are insensible to their own meanness of spirit. If they gave a little thought and analysed their own lives they would see their characters in a true light, and realise the harm they are doing is the world..

To be jealous of the prosperity of others is indefensible. No matter ia what branch of life a person may achieve success, it makes for the improvement of conditions. If in industry, it will mean éroployment of labour, and so beneft the country in science, it will be for the good of mankind in art or literature, help to elevate public thought. All progression

Very noticeable of late has been the fashion to disparage everything British. Many people seem to imagine that nothing produced bere can equal that made abroad Here, again, we have an exam- ple of the necessity for new thought.

Have they considered that by decrying all things British their criticham is destruc- tive and injurious! A little concentrated thought, and they must see that, by birth they are citizens of the greatest Empire the world has ever known, and inheritors of traditions which will be imperishable for all time.

And having realised this, they would hold their heads higher, insist on buying British goods, and hack their own people; Know Yourself. Get that pioneer and {pride-of-rurg spirit, and do all you can [to bring others into line

WHY ADVERTISE ADVERSITY) More often than not, when people have streak of bad luck they get downin the mouth," allow themselves to drifty and become careless of all appearances In this age the world has no sympathy with failure. Why advertise adversity1.

Certain it is that in business the well dressed man or woman will always have the advantage over the unkempt rival, It costs nothing to take pride in one's appearance. The ples that ope cannot afford new clothes is a feeble excuse, rad no answer for an untidy head or in shaven face. There must be men whose ability justified promotion in business who have wondered why they have remained in the same position while others have risen over their leads.

Our whole civilisa- tion is founded on a financial substruc ture. But to imagine that everything in this world can be obtained with money is

absurd.

Here is an example where cold logic will be of great beneft. People who want to know you only for what they can get out of you are not worth counting as friends, Don't imagine the flattery of the parasitical sycophants who fawn on you Use your intellect. Don't over-estimate your importance. 02 man may be a matter how great there are plenty of others who can take his place. He would never be missed, and the world would still go on without him.

It is often said of famous men and mil- lionaires that they made their positions in the world by gambling. Don't believe it. They took risks yes; but they did not gamble. Everything was weighed in A the balance. They knew themselves and their capabilities, and had supreme hellef in their judgment.

Bat the big men of the world never destructively criticise the efforts of others. They have a broad outlook on life, int they are the target for the leaser brains.

Hare a purpose make up your mind. Know yourself. Then go ahead; be cour ageous and strike out fearlessly. You are bound to be criticised-ignore it.

The day you know yourself you will have planted your foot firmly on the first rung of the ladder of success.--Illus trated Sunday Herald (London).
