THE PRIZE-WINNERS. The prizes were distributed by Lady Clementi as follows:

The report was read by Cher. J. ALVES, who said: The Rev. Mother Superior has been good enough to assign to me the privilege of reading on this occasion the report of the Headmistress of the school for the last year, an honour which I greatly appreciate, not only be- cause I have three little daughters receiv ing their education at St. Mary's but also because it has always been a great pleatina Garcia. sure to me to be of some service to such an institution as the Cannosian Institute, whoso members dorote their lives 40 will ingly and so gladly to the self-sacrificing. relatively obscure, yet immensely noble task of educating the young-and all for the greater Glory of God.

It is not necessary for me to say very much to a Kowlcon audience about the excellent work which this school has been doing, for the devoted work of its Head- mistress and staff is already well known to the Public of the Peninsula.

However, before I proceed, to read the report I wish to congratulate the Rev. Mother Superior and the teachers of the school on the new building, erected to replace the old wooden structure, which was totally destroyed by the disastrous typhoon in August, 1923. It is indeed a fine building with airy rooms, good light, and cheerful surroundings.

--

I consider the addition not only import. ant but a necessary cae in view of the increasing demand for clucation facilitics for Kowloon, which, as we all can see, is developing rapidly to become the most popular residential area of the Colony.

I understand that this is the first public function in this new building, and I say bow proud the School must feel to have the honour of this function being pre- sided over by Lady Clementi, who, we all know, takes such a real, personal and effective interest in education.

I cannot im press too strongly on all Portuguese girls here the desirability of acquiring a good knowledge of their own language, which will open to them the rich field of the beautiful literature of our country. I am aware that there is a feeling that here in Hongkong the study of the English language is of more importance for Portu guese children than that of "their own language; it is essentially a question of
