The thirty-ninth ordinary annual meet- ing of shareholders of the Hongkong & Kowloon Wharf & Gedown Company, Limited, for the purpose of receiving the report of the directors and the statement. of accounts for the year ended December 31st, 1993, was held in the office of Messrs. Jardine, Matheson & Co., Ltd.. yesterday at 11 am.

The CHAIRMAN said: Gentlemen,The Report and Statement of Accounts, 10- gether, with the Auditors Report, have been in your hands for some days and with your permission I will follow the usual procedure and take them as read.

A SUGGESTION TÒ CANTON.

The river between Whampca and Can- ton has been steadily deteriorating for years, but according to the report of the Board of Conservancy works of Ewang tung in 1917 it would not be difficult nor unduly expensive to effect improvements permitting vessels drawing 17.2 feet to reach Canton twice daily as against only 12 feet at the time the report was writ ten and, that is, allowing 1.5 feet under the keel in each case. It also says that by deepening the second bar it would be possible to conduct vessels drawing-up to 29.7 feet to Whampoa every day of the year by utilizing the tidal range. However to attempt to provide for vessels of greater draft would appear to be neither a practical nor a commercial pro- position.

The Canton river is the natural chan nel for the trade of South China and with settled conditions in the province and the completion of the Canton-Hankow Rail- way there will be a very great increase trade. To care for this, and also to assist in developing it, it is essential that better. port facilities should be provided:

Now that the. Authorities in Canton have woken up to appreciate this fact and to see the importance, or, mare, the necessity, of developing the resources at their disposal, it is seriously to be hoped that they will proceed with the work without delay.

CLOSING QUOTATIONS.

We have taken advantage of the slack period to get on with the new 4 storied, godown which has been under considera tion for some time. This will take the place of No. 8 and 9, which bave already been pulled down, and will be of great help in assisting us to handle the large volume of cargo which we had difficulty, in dealing with before. The ground floor should be ready for receiving cargo st the beginning of 1927 and the whole build- ing completed towards the end of the year. It will be fitted with modern mechanical appliances for handling cargo and will accommodate about 35,000 tons.

THE ACCOUNTS.

Turning now to the accounts you will observe that retiring bonuses to staff amount to the large sum of $51,978.30. Three members of our staff retired during the year with over 25 years service and Another with over 20 years.
