HOW TO LIVE LONG.
(RY JACK ROBES, THE SURREY CRICKETER. ]
Jahit is the keynote of health. Habit of feeding, of drinking, of exercise and. of sleep-alone matters, and you cannot play ducks and drakes with your normal habits or the whole structure of health will come tumbling down.
Suddenly to do a thing to excess when it has been your normal babit to do it only in moderation, abruptly to cease which esting or drinking something to your system is accustomed through months of habit, is certain to cause trouble.
the Interfere with
normal growth of a tree, a fower or a potato, and a freak effect results, usually some- thing stunted and essentially weak, Interfere with the normal development of human life, with the habits of feeding and drinking that were born of the environ ment and circumstance of childhood and youth, and that life will become a freak.
Possibly the freakish aspect will be prodigious strength in one direction and definite weakness in another. But what- ever occurs, there will not be perfect harmony between body and mind, and co-ordination between every muscle.
THE CRICKETED'S WINTER.
The sportsman who keeps himself in training through the summer for his cries ket, and then slacks off when winter comes and his game is not being played, is making a mistake. The man who sleeps for five hours one night and eleven the next makes a more trifling error, but the principle is the same. Habit is being broken. The human system is asked to strain itself in an attempt to keep pace with constantly changing conditions, and is thereby enfeebled.
That cricketer who forgets to keep in training during the winter will find that his brain has ceased to be in tune with his muscles, that his movements have lost, the smooth and rapid action which char acterised them through the summer. Next season he will recognise his mis- take, and will undertake a hurried. three weeks' training to repair the damage. At the end of the three weeks he will be stale, his muscles will be stiff and tired, and his movements will flag in the first game. Gentle, daily exercise through the winter would have obviated such a dis aster.
I can best explain what I mean by telling of the phsical jerks" the Test- team went through just before the frat Test match of the 1st Australian tour.
Four days before the match was due to begin at Sydney we were requested to attend a gymnasium. We did, and tha exercizes would have been beneficial it the ile bad not occurred too late. Ob- viously, the unaccustomed strain made us stif We had no time to work off that stihacas, and the effects were felt wher we went out to play.
Personally I never touch alcohol drinks, but I see no reason why other people should not do so. If they are accustom- ed to drinks that are not spirits-spirits I certainly think injurious their health will, in my opinion, be adversely affected if they suddenly cease to take any Simi- larly, of course, their health will suffer if they suddenly increase their usual quanti- ties of drink.
It is the same with food. Some mei- the late W. G. Grace was an example- hive a passion for steak puddings, and can play cricket after lunching off them. I could not, though, fortunately, I am built in such a way that I never put of weight. But all heavy meals should he avoided by sportsmen, though cricketers need the least dieting and training of all. My only dieting consists in having grape fruit every morning.
Sleep for the sportsman. is the most important thing to be made into a habit. It alone soothes the nerves, and on the nerves depend that complete sympathy of brain and eyes which makes for perfect timing. I personally sleep for nine hours every night. Mr. Fender never gets up until about ten or eleven in the morning, and on cricket tours the necessity for sleep is so well recognised that no match ever takes place the day after a night that has been spent travelling in a train Incidentally, I can always manage to fall asleep for an hour or so when I am sit ting in the pavilion at the Oval, and there is no question that these brief rests have frequently been of great benefit to me.
Exercise, too, must be kept, up. The muscles need loosening every morning and tuning up to their appointed state of efficiency. Even through the sportsmen's season it is necessary, and I make a point of doing a few exercises every morning. In the winter it is more than important: it is essential. The man who stops play- ing his regular game for a number of months must find something to take its place.
BADMINTON.
People talk about walking as one of the most efficient methods of keeping fit. Bill Hitch claims that walking took a coupic of stones off his weight prior to the last" season, and he hoped it was going to en
But able him to bowl as fast sa ever.
1 do not think walking is suficient by itself. I get my walking exercise by play ing golf with Andy Sandbam and Bert Strudwick through the winter, but there is not the necessity for quick thinking and movement in the game, and so I play badminton as well.
To play cricket through the summer F have to be supple and able to move and 3 game think quickly.". Badminton is which calls for similar attributes. Squash rackets is as good a substitute, but squash rackets is beyond the reach of the major ity, and badminton is the game I would recommend. ***
Some men consider smoking injurious to sportsmen. I do not, but then cricket does not demand the constant speed of other games like modern Association foot- ball, and if I still played, footbal instead of watching it I might change my opinion. As it is, I have often found my pipe con solation for bad luck on the field; but, again, I do not Amoke to excess.
Nevertheless, the surgeon who operated on me some time ago thought I ought to give up the little smoking that I do. He himself was a non-smoker and teetotaller. He told me that even one cigarette would make all the difference to him when it came to operating, and again the truth of the necessity for conforming to the habits of a lifetime can be seen. Mothers
writes:
Kalzana
the building material of all body-cells
J
“I gave Kalzana in my wife during pregnancy and my small son is certainly a most excellent specimen of humanity. My wife still takes Kalzana occasionally so that the breast milk may supply a full quotient of calcium to the child.”
Calcium is life itself to body cells, for without it the cells dir, and even a slight shortage is nowadays recognised as the underlying cause of many common ailments.
In nursing mothers there is a heavy loss of calcium by the bores and tissues, and any deficiency is quickly shown. by decay of teeth, lactational headaches and general weakness. The baby, too, is under-developed, with weak bones and delayed dentition. Kalzania is a porene means of restoring normal calcium meta- bolism in nursing mothers. It quickly dispels weakness, debility and irritability, and prevents loss of teeth. At the same time it ensures strong bones, sound teeth and a robust constitution to the child. Invaluable in delayed and painful
dentition.
Start Kalzana to-day and make sure that your baby will be strong and sturdy.
