[BY ARGUS.).

Though rain is still desperately needed to enable trainers to "send their charges along without running risks to liga. meats, sufficient moisture fell on Friday night to take some of the "bone" out of the ground; and much useful work, was done on the grass course on Saturday morning.

Though the Derby is down for decision in three weeks from Tuesday, I have met no one, who feels at all confident that he has found any candidate with reason able chances of carrying off the local

"Blue Riband.".

For some time it has been conceded that

Messrs. Toeg and Friestley probably stable two mares that are certain to go close, if fit and well on the day. These are Saucy Sue and Pretty Polly. The last named, I understand, threw a splint below the near.knee, which accounted for ber absence from the course for some days. She has been at trotting exercise during the past week and appears to be sound; but her temporary absence from the track may have prejudiced her chances for the Derby. Meanwhile, her stable companion, Saucy Sue, has been pleasing some of the critics, who say If Pretty Polly is the better of the two she is almost a moral certainty provided her recent ailment has not definitely, pre- vented her being thoroughly wound up by the great day."-

In neither case, as far as I am aware, has either mare done anything during training to justify such optimism. Saucy Sue, it is true, did, a fair gallop on Satur- day but she certainly appeared to need riding to keep her alongside Raider, the

RAILWAY sub-griffin who brought her home.

Sir Shou Son Chow, the Hon. Dr. R. H. Fotewall, LL.D., Me, Y. P. Law, B.A. (Inspector of Vernacular Schools), Mr. Li Yik Mui, Mr. Chou Ting Sang and Mr. Yung

The proceedings were opened with the singing of the school song, by the whole school, after which the Principal read the report for 1993:

The } girls opened a free school at Causeway Bay in 1920 as a result of the work done been managed and maintained by the girls in the New Year Evangelistic week. It has ever since with the generous help of Mr. Wong Kata Fuk who donates $120 per annum towards the expenses. The first one in charge of the school was a grada ate of ours who has now gone back to

The strike, which caused a big drop in the number of students in most other schools, made little difference to us, for our average attendance for 1995 was only seven pupils less than that of 1924, though in both years we had as many as we could take. (Applause.

"

The Summer vacation commenced on June 23th, a fortnight carlier than sche duled time, because the girls nad to walk all the way from Causeway Bay, Wanchai and West Point to the school after all means of conveyance had stopped. (Ap- plause) The school was very well at tended up to the time of the vacation.. We re-opened on September 1st in order not to fail to full the required number of the school days in the year."

The general work of the school was found to be very satisfactory by the Inspector of Vernacular Schools who com plimented us on the handwriting and the general neatness of the written work.

Essay writing was good, and in SORTE

glasses the work was more advanced than the required standard. The girls are diligent and show a desire to learn, but what makes me rejoice most is to see the spirit of self-reliance, self-sacrifice and self-respect rapidly developing.

In conclusion, the Principal expressed her thanks to Mrs. Griggs, Miss Capel and Miss Shea for getting up the day's programme, and the H.K. Amusements, Ltd., particularly Mr. Ray, for the kind loan of the theatre.

The report was also read in Chinese) by Mr Yung.

THE BISHOP'S ADDRESS. Introducing Lady Clementi, the Bisor OF VICTORIA said that Miss Woo had referred in her report to the great debt owed by the school to the Hen. Dr. Kate- wall, Chairman of the Building Cora- mitteo, Mr. Lee Hysan, donors to. the Building Fund, and also to the loyalty and support shown by the scholars them selves during 1925. There was one point on which the report was silent, because it had been written by Miss Woo herself, and that was the debt the school owed
