INDUSTRY IN CHINA. MARKED PROGRESS DURING LAST DECADE.

Mr. Kenneth. H. Dame, of the Far Eastern Division, US Department of Commerce, in an article in the Far

Eastern Review writes:

China, though yet a nation of bandi craft, during the last decade has wit. nessed marked progress in the develop ment of more modern industrial enter prises within its borders. With the out- break of the World War many commodi- ties, which Chins formerly secured from Europe could not be obtained, and, in

consequence, factories were established. in various parts of the country. Many of these factories are capitalized by British, German, and Japanese interests, and exist in or near the foreign protected treaty ports. Their success in the production of foreign-type articles for home consump tion gave much encouragetaent to the expansion of manufacturing along western Hines, until to-day manufactured goods of modern type are even beginning to find markets abroad. In 1012 the value of factory products exported from China amounted to 3,724,813 haikwan tael. In 1924 it totalled 19,610,281.

ELECTRICAL EXPANSION.”

A good illustration of the industrial progress that has been taking place in racent years is the expansion of electric lighting and power plants. Prior to 1910 the use of electricity industrially in Chiss was in an embryonic stage. To-day there are electric power plants in Shanghai, Tientsin, Harbin, Hongkong, Hankow, Canton, and the other large cities, and the number of electric power and lighting plants combined in China, is estimated, at nearly 100% There are few towns of any importance that do not have a lighting plant
