FORGOTTEN STAMPS,

A SCHOOLBOY'S HOBBY AND 60 YEARS AFTER.

One of the romances of stamp collecting has had a sequel in a Loadou auction room. Sixty or seventy years ago the grandfather of a present noble- man used to send £5 and 210 notes to Colonial Postmasters for sheets of their stamps. He was then a schoolboy. As he grew up his hobby got neglected and then forgotten. Some time ago a re lative, when looking for a jewel case in an old bureau in Mayfair attic, found a stray some old Christmas cards. She lifted the tray, out, and dis- covered underneath;'a number of "sheets of stamps originally of the valus or £30 or £40, but now probably worth from £12,000 to £15,000. Mr. R.: Harmer, the Bond-street philatelic auctioneer, was invited to see the lot, and he is to sell them.

Amongst the most important are complete sheets of the 1001 Brit Columbia 2d. reddish rosy stamp and the halfpenny lilae stamp on white glazed paper imued in 1888 in Cøylón” There are 150 stamps in the complete Carlon sheet, and there is another similar sheet with two stampa removed. Single copies of the stamps of this issue havo fetched recently as much as 24, but pro- bably no living collector, it is stated, has ever seen a full shoot until now. There are rare. Queensland and Western Aus- trplish abdete Also in the collection; and stamps from the Ionian Islands, which had just been ceded to Britain at the date when the enterprising school- boy was forming his forgotten collection.
