The following two points had to be borne in mind in appreciating the mone- tary conditions in Yunnan province in those days.

(u) Owing to balance the province normally imported the favourable trade Silver either a coins (as was chiefly the rase until 1913) or in ingots destined to the Yunnanfu inint. This is being done to-day.

The recent monetary history of Yunnan has been chequered. In 1919-1920 the provincial Government "suddenly discon tinued the importation of silver and, for the Brst time probably in the history of China, turned to gold, the price of which had greatly altered in terms of silver. Gold coins of 85 and $10 were coined to an amount of about $9,300,000 on the

In regard to the note issue, it seems that the original capital of the issuing bank, which amounted to taels 800,000, has long ago disappeared in the political turmoil which has disturbed Yurinan, në also has the Tls. 400,000 received from the public treasury. This fact, however, has not by any means slackened the issue of notes (in denominations of $100, 850, $10, 80 and 8), repayable in practice in dollar or half dollar coins at the option of the bank.
