LORD INVERFORTH ON START OF A NEW ERA.
't
Lord Inverforth, in his presidential address to the Institute of Marine En- gineers in London on October 20th, said his opinion was that we were at the com- mencement of a new era in the history. of marine motive, power! The enterprise which had made us second to none a highly skilled mechanics and engineers stul predominated, and would lead us to the same degree of perfection in motors As was attained by us in steam.
Progressive methods, however, were at the moment seriously handicapped by the inter- unprecedented "depression in national trade and also because the cost. of production still remained abnormally high. He was inclined to believe that employers and employed were beginning to understand each other better, and be hoped that this would lead to the elimin nation of the unfruitful apathy and dis- trust prevailing in the past on both sides, In connection," he continued.
Ming Way Briers to follow, with this come we have all observed

The shipping statement, for yester- day showed that the total nuraber of vessels in the harbour at 5 am. was 71, of which 33 were British.
with great regret the considerable volume of construction which of late has been diverted to other nationals by reason of our inability to meet competition. I am convinced that this is not by reason of any material difference in wages, but is mainly attributed to the fact that our competitors can produce so much more in the same period, in consequence of more efficient labour organisation, cou- pled with a greater degree of knowledge and skill on the part of the employees of the economical appliances at their dis
Employers and employed must posal. get together and solve existing problems between them, and the longer they re- main estranged the more difficult will these problems become,
Shipping is still, and will always re- main, by virtue of our insular position and the extent of our Dominions beyond the seas, our most important national asset, and there should be no conceiv able reason why it should be wrested from us. Efficient communication with our many Colonics is a duty, which is ex- pected of us, and it is only natural that those lands which cope within our Em pire should be served by tonnage Bying our fag. A revival of trade must be sought within the Emuire, but it can only be rendered feasible when normal con ditions of life are resumed. Political, social, and labour unrest must be abolish- ed, and substituted by that bond of sym- pathy and good fellowship, which has enabled us to find solutions for many weighty problems arising in other times of national emergency.”
