LORD CURZON'S WILL. BEQUESTS TO THE NATION.
The late-Marquis Curion of Kedleston has left to the nation a generous legacy of historic castles and other bequests. The better to full his intention, he has expressed in a few characteristic words the view and purpose that impelled him fo secure them for the nation years ago: Convinced that beautiful and ancient buildings which recall the life and tus toms of the past are not only a historical document of supreme value but are a part of the spiritual and mathetic herit age of a nation, imbuing it with reverence and educating its lante, I bequeath for the benefit of the nation certain proper ties which I have acquired for the express purpose of preserving the historic buil dings upon them.

It is worth recalling that in the tributes to Lord Curzon's work which were evoked in both Houses of Parliament by his

of the north front was approached by a raised causeway, defended by small barbican, of which some remains exist. An exceedingly hac entrance, it is flank ed by two grandly machicolated square towers. The castle was built by Six Edward Dalyngrugge, of East: Grinstead & knight who served in France, with the Black Prince. In 1013 it was dismantled by Sir William Walier, who, after the siege of Arundel, despatched parties to Jestroy all the Royalist fortresses in Sussex, when the materials were sold and nothing was left of this fine Early Per- pendicular piece of architecture except the outer walls and towers

Tattershall, Tower, which is another part of Lord Curzon's bequest, is twelve niles from Boston, in Lincolnshire, and has been described as perhaps the finest. specimen of a brickwork structors in the kingdom. The tower now standing form- ed the keep of an extensive fortress erected in the reign of Henry VI. by Ralph, Lord Cromwell, upon the site of earlier Norman castle. In 1551 Edward VI. bestowed the castle and. maner on Edward, Lord Clinton and Sage, afterwards Earl of Lincoln; in aboan family they remained until 1692. when, on the death of the sixth carl, they became the property, through his consin Bridget, of Hagh Fortescue,, from whom they descended to Earl Fortescue. One of the characteristics best known to his friends was Lord Curzon's prefer- ence for using his own vigorous per- manship, and avoiding dictation or mechanical devices as far as possible. It is pot surprising, therefore, that the greater part of the will, a document of considerable length, consists of his own writing, frequently altered by bis legal advisers, but finally revised by his own hand in pencil, and signed the day before the operation he did not survive. In the scale of its figures the document is in teresting, for it disposes offrent and personal estates (apart from settled. estates) sworn at £234,604 1s. 10d., and net personalty at £302,709 138,-11d.-sums which involve estate duty at £67,000, and many succession and legacy duties be sides.
There is a touching reference in the chief personal bequest, showing that the scholar and statesman was a man of deep feeling He leaves to his wife, whom I love, and who has given me love and happiness," his interest in No. 1, Carlton House-terrace, with the contents." In leaving her choice of domicile between this town house and Kedleston, and the disposal of their contents, he appoints Lady Curzon £1,000 a year for life," as it seems right that she should not be left without some maintenance from the shes estates whose name she bear. There are provisions for the heirlooms left by his ancestors and himself, “to remain mtact," and he has not forgotten Red- leston Parish Church and its incumbent. Finally, this family connection he re- fers to the prior dispositions of Mr. and Mrs. Leiter, the parents of his first wife, and leaves his three daughters to be divided between them the faces, fans, dresses, furs, and, parammal belongings of their mother with the exception of the peacock dress what was wore at the
