GENTLEMEN F. PLAYERS. SENSATIONAL FINISH AT THE OVAL

The Gentlemen beat the Players in amazing fashion by four wickets on July 10th at the Oval, the winning hit being made in the last over of the day. Such a finish to such a match has not been seen for about a generation..

When at five o'clock Hobbs declared the second innings of the Players closed the Amateurs were asked to get 196 runs in a possible 100 minutes to win.

Well as Lionel Tennyson and CÓ N. Bence hit when the fourth innings of the game began, everyone thought that at a draw was inevitable, and it was not until Nigel Haig was joined by R. Air that the seemingly impossible began. to happen. There was only one thing to do if victory was to be achieved, and that was to hit consistently at the pitch of every ball bowled. This was done, and done, successfully, too. Haig and Aird never faltered. Haig began by hitting Tate for four 's in succession, and the onlookers then witnessed some extraordinary driv ing and leg bitting. Nothing of the kind has been seer, on the Oval since Hobby and J. N. Crawford won the Kent match Like them, years ago in drizzling enin. they had to 6ght "the clock and the howlers, and like them they did it. It was exactly one minute to seven "when" the winning hit "was made. It was a) splendid and "an amazing batting per fortinue that they accomplished.

Overnight the Gentlemen had made 419 For nine wickets, and as . B. Allen's not out seare then was 33, the captain of the amateur side did not declare the innings closed. Allen did more than make his own score a hundred, He hit extremely well, and by doing gave his side a tead of 55 runs.

HOBBS RUN ÖFT

"It was about ball-past twelve that, Hobbs, taking Bowley in with him, began the second innings of the Players. It was at once seca that the great batsman, although he treated R. H. Bettington with marked respect. was in his best farmi. He got runs nt'a good, pace both before and after the loucheon interval, and he seemed morally sure to get yet Another hundred when Bowley ran him out in a way that is rare in first-class cricket. Hobbe pushed the ball gently forward

towards extra mil-off and trotted. I did WELLINGTON

not actually hear him call, but it was one of those runs for which it is not necessary to call. Both batsmen jast trot eross autoinatically as they do when the striker sends the hall into the long field. But Bowley did not move, nor did he shout to Hobbs to go back. Allen was stard- ing very deep at enver-point, and he had to travel about fifteen yards or more to get to the hall. Hobbs reached Bonier, bject that may present itself. to find him standing still, and. picking up. the ball. Allen lobbed it underhand to the wicket-keeper.

I must have been a case of mental aberration. Even so, Bowley had time

to atone for his error. He could have crossed Hobbs and been run out himself, and to do that would have been in the interests of justice as well as in those of his side. Bat he did not; he let Hobbs suffer. She once again did the non-guilty person pay the penalty. Hobbs, as has been said, was making runs at a good pace. His example was, not followed. Bowley made runs slowly; so did Hen- dren. Hearne made them very slowly in- deed. He was continually barracked" by a malcontent in the ring, but was not at all disturbed by that. Hobbs tried to give him men a hint to mend the pace by sending in Tate to bat, but it was lost on them. As has been said, it won' five when Hobbs made the declaration' which was destined to be disastrous to, his side. Yet when he made it it a. minianum segmed, to all that he ran of risk. The drive is overmuch eschewed in, these days.. and to hit at the pitch of good-length balls will get for those who do it reprimand and not admiration."} But Tennyson, Brner. Aird, and notably Haig did that with almost unerring acentracy, and is doing so won a superb victory for their side. Perhaps they did more" than that. Timorous batting has far too much official encouragement; and though it may save them, rarely wins matches. Those who saw the finish of this great game are not likely to forget it, or the lesson it so emphatically tea- ches, Scores:
