At a luncheon which fellowrd, Lord Balfour, acknowledging, the toast of his health, said that in the early 17th century the Stationers Company were the instrument for suppressing free thought, He wondered whether if the Dean St. Paul's and himself had lived in those days their activities might not have been directed, misdirreted -- (laughter) wards dealing with speculations which in those days might have been regarded as perilous in their character. he had to write with the "knowledge that if he was advanced about women his plays would be publicly burned in the garden of Stationers Hail (Laughter.) So he left a cipher. (Laughter.) Nog in the text where everybody has been looking for it, but in the eutining omission of all stage directions, and the winner of today, as he hoped, have had the wit to read that her right, and so we are going to have a new edition of his works called, very properly, thes Ladies' Shakespeare, (Laughter.)
*
Shakespeare has heard that he is about tu be understood at last. They say that a look of expectancy has come over the face of his statue in Leicester square. (Laughter.) If the Indy who gives us the real Katharine has the courage to limb the railings when London is asleep, she may find Shakespeare waiting at the funt of his pedestal to lead her round the square, talking to her in the language of Homeo. I do not know who she is to be, but I hope Dame Jillen Terry will eome back in one of her swallow-flights, and perhaps get her reward.

My last fact. There must be few here who have not heard of the ghost of Stationers Hall. The ghost. I under stand, is a serap of paper, which proves conclusively thas Bacon did not write Shakespeare (Laughter.) But I get this from the Ladies' Shakespeare-Bacon was not the only author in that house- hold. This document, I am told, is sign- ed by Shakespeare and is in these words. "Received from Lady Bacon for father- hug hér play of Hamlet, £3. '(Laughter.) Proposing the health of Mr. Rudyard Kipling, the Muster said that the nu ber of his works had endeared him to every paper-muker, printer, and buck- binder in this country.. (Laughter.).
Mr. Kipling said that it must have been a bruther of their mystery who first dis envered that if the leaves of the papyrus plant were soaked in the Nile and beaten with a mallet the beastly stuffe stuck together and made what looked like paper. He continued:
So we called it paper and we supplied it as stationery and men began to write upon it with reed pens.
THE ELEVENTH PLAGUE -
Some desperate soul, impatient dl the slow. beautiful handicraft of the past, had invented the printing press.
They, instantly charged it with station-. ery and created the business of publish- ing and distribution, and among them laspched the Eleventh Plagnes oli suffer- jing humanity.
Since that dreadful date there had not been a
ringe in the Decalogue, from anonymous letter-writing to the spread of idealism, which they had not fostered, "facilitated, and democratised. They hail tarned life into the nightmare of a never- empty waste-paper basket.
Our existence was forced on by the providential itch for self-expression which afflicts, poets, playwrights, politicians, and other storytellers. For, sira, ye know that by their craft yo have your: wealth.. Yet it is to our credit that the Stationers' Company bas striven to miti gate some of the evils it has abetted.
