SCOTTISH LETTER.
(Continued from page 6.)
ORDER FOR THE MASNACHE OF GLENCOR
most
Last week, what purported to be the original order upon which Capt. Robert Campbell of Genlyon and his soldiery. fell upon the Macdonalds of Gletivos and massacre then was put up for auction, and only 30 being bid, remained un- sold. It is written on one page of thin, paper. runs to nineteen lines of script of the character of the period, on what soems unquestionably to be paper of the period and is signed "Ro. Duncanson.” Ancient historical documents that come out of the blus" into auction rooms- particularly if they are Scottish-are, now-a-days, regarded with scepticism by even the most impassioned calleMors. That redoubtable Hdinburgh forger, Antique Smith," who for yeng kept the credulous supplied with the plausible-looking counterfeits of old MS., launched so large a body of spur-. ious documents upon the world that his ghest haunts every saleroom where such things as charters and historical letters are awaiting purchase. He was, in his wicked way, a genius; took tremendous pains to have the right paper or parch ment and the right ink for his works of art, and was never more impressive than when investing the caligraphy for some personage of importance, not ons scrap. of whose handwriting could be found for comparison. Whether the Glencoe docu- ment is genuine or a frauda question. the "experts" cautiouslyfefrain from discussing in public-it is exactly such a relic as Antique Smith" could have produced with artistic ecstasy Ho. Duncanson was Major in Argyll's regi- ment in 1892. Through political "bosses" and his own superior officers, the order for the extirpation of the Macdonalds came to him, and he passed on the dirty job to his Captain in a written order, the more or less exact terms of which have been frequently published. He followed sound military tradition, and practically copied out the order as it had reacted himself, with its bloodthirsty and barbarian details about slaughtering all below seventy years of age, particularly the old fox and his cubs," and the significant conclusion which said,The Government are not to be troubled with prisonere." Duncanson may look like a Lowland name, but in the 17th Century and long after it covered & sept of the Clan Campbell which was specially in favoir with the Argyll This Duncanson was of no marked social or territorial standing; and if the signature to the MS. order now in the market is actually in his handwriting, it is the only holo- graph signature of his extant
For
Antique Smith" the temptation to forge the fatal order of Duncanson, the terms of which were to be found in printed We books. may have been irresistible. shall never know" with certainty, but the thought may well account for a certain coolness in anction-rooms."
E. H. LIDDELL AND CHINA.
Ouder the auspices of the Glasgow Students' Evangelistic Union, a farewell- meeting of Mr. E. H."Liddell, B.Sc., the Olympic Champion, was held in Glas- ROW. Mr. Liddell, who received a great. ovation, said two years ago he was faced with the greatest problem of his life. He bad been asked to assist at a cam- paign in Armadale, and at that thine he had never addressed a gathering, and was very reluctant about accepting. On the following morning he received a message from his sister, which contained; the text Prar not, for I am with thee; do not dismay, for I will guide thee." That text had helped him to make his decision, and since he had endeavoured Mr. to do the work of his Master. Liddell expressed his deep thanks to the members of the G.S.E.U., both in Edin. burgh and Glasgow, for all they had been to him in enriching his life. He was sorry to leave Scotland, for it had peculiar appeal-partly because he was a native of Scotland, and partly for the privileges, he had enjoyed. in it. But China was calling him, and he felt ho was destined for that country, where, as a teacher in the Tientsin Anglo-Chinese Christian College, he could best use any talents he possesses.. The Rev. H, Malfat Scott, late of Morningside Congrega tional Church, Edinburgh, stated that Mr. Liddell was the thirty-fourth member of his Edinburgh church who had given his services for mission work abroad,
EXPLORER AT 25.
Capt. Amundsen, who is now 53, was the first explorer to reach the South Pole--which he did in December, 1911, shortly before" Capt. Scott. He had already to his credit the achievement of having made the North-West Passage, a feat beyond the compass of Franklin, and of McClintock
Amundsen graduated at Christiania University, but soon afterwards went to sea. The example of his friend Nansen had fired his imagination, and at 25 he accompanied Capt Gerlache in the Bel

"Likewise," agreed the Second, "if I presently call for a 'Scotch and Soda' and my palate rebels at the touch of the lesser, fiery fluid, I must remember in my affliction—”
"That when two plain words bring to the lips a most delectable spirit," interjected Number One, "twere folly to call for the unchristened sorts.” "Let us," concluded the Second W.M., “establish a valuable entente between our palates and our tongues by calling for-
