A' HEATED CONTROVERSY.

Lord Inchcape's indictment of the way in which the Scottish Sundng is observed, has as I prelicted last week, given rise to a heated controversy. His opinion, you will remember, is that we have, too much of it. People, he says, need to enjoy themselves on Sunday; instead they have to spend a weary hour or so in listen ing to theological discourses which can only be borne with the aid of pepper- ment drops. What we need are shorte bright services at ten o'clock in the mora- ing, which will allow us to, crank up aur enrs and get away to our, golf courses ab a reasonable hour. And the ministers, who haven't too much to do. should ne member that busy men have not time or energy for logma. Well, the ministers, not nanaturally, object. They paint out that they have as much to do as other people. But to the ordinary man, this most important things in the discussion are the questions of work and games on Sunday and of the position of the Chur- ches in that erspect. The fact is that there are now quite a number of people who do not go to church at all. Their attituile" to the question, has nothing to de with the hours of services or the peppermint-drop servidus, which now scarcely exist. They have simply lost the habit of church-going, and they will enjoy themselves on Sunday, whatever happens. Then there are the people who, like Lord Inchenpe, want to go to church and enjoy themselves too. What they are, perhaps little apt to forget is that others who have spent a week not less busy than their own are able to rest and still to attend church on Sunday morn ings just because church services are not at ten o'clock. And lastly, there are the people who keep the Sabbath more or les in the old way-though not, of course, with drawn blinds and closed pianos-- because they want to, and who will con tinue to do so, whatever may be the hour of their services. We have reached a condition of affairs now-a-days" when it f is the people who do want to go to church who really count in these matters. There is no longer any disgrace in staying away from church, there is nothing to compel anyone who would rather be goláng, to attend a service. So that it is, perhaps, scarcely fair for the man who thinks that golf cones first to expect his neighbours to arrange matters for his benefit. And it certainly isn't fair for him to ask the minister whoa: church he favours not to talk about the things which it is his special business to explain. Indeed, it is particularly unfair to do this, because the Scottish churches. have for some time avoided the discussion of theology almost as much as even Lord Inchcape could desire. And the result is not too en- couraging, for if business men are too tired to trouble about these things: there are younger people who are apt to find a Church without any definite opinions
