CHAMBER OF SHIPPING.

LITTLE PROFIT" FOR CARGO

VESSELS,

The annual report of the Chamber of Shipping, of the United Kingdom states that the depression in the shipping in- dustry contigues, and that, although open market freight rates were through out the greater part of last year slightly higher than those of the corresponding months of 1923, there was a set-back at the end of the years

Working expenses of ships were the Chamber writes, perhaps a little less, lar gely owing to the decreased cost of coal and insurance, while wages and the cost of oil and stores increased. The cost of handling goods it the docks was higher. owing to the advance in dockers' wages.

The report producda:

A survey of the whole industry reveals the fact that.. on the balance, British citr= | go ships have made little or no profit,| during the year. The industry would be in a grave condition to-day had not ship- owners conserved the the industry as a resources firm thes past, which has enabled whole to face the continued depression.

ADMIRAL ORIENTAL RECORD.

Travelling a total of 1,340,000 miles- since the establishment of the service, without a single overhauling of its vessels, the American Oriental Mail Line, operated by the Admiral Oriental Line

from Seattle, has created an interesting record in transpacific trade, according to Kehoe, Keneral Eastern agent. for the company in New York. The mile- of the line's abips is equal to 3 tires Around the earth.

Age

During this period," said M. Kehoe, "the company has dinke Seattle with the Orient on the fastest schedule over esta- blished from that port. The total steam- disumes of our vessels since the service was started on April 9th, 1921, is

With the exception of minor repairs the five liners have gone this distance without

a compléte general overhaul

and are now receiving their first extensive of machinery. This work

reconditionder way and will flashed. is already cost 81,000,000 by the time it is

Our vessels will then be all ready for an indefinite period of high class service as the finest line operated on that route The record of the last four years is one of which we feel we can justly be proud.".
