LANGKAT ANNUAL MEETING.

GOOD QUALITY OF TIMBERS REPORTED.

The annual general meeting of the Langkat Co. was held at Shanghai ov March 31st, at the offices of Messrs. Geo. McBain, the general agents. Mr. R. 8. F. McBain presided and was supported by Mr. Joha Prentice.

The Chairman said; In speaking last, year of the accounts. I drew attention to the fast that, the item sundry assets in the balance sheet had been reduced during the your we were then reviewing by about Tha 100,000, and I said that we hope to see them still further reduced during the year on which we had then entered. In this we were disappointed, as the result of the shipment of drilling tools and machinery which, we made to America turned out less satisfactory than we expected and I any afraid that we can- not now hope to get much oby -return for it as a good deal of the machinery is obsolete, and low prices will have to he taken for it

I am sorry to say that the oil and sundry working account still shows a loss. There is, however, a considerable saving in the expenses generally. As the report says, the expenditure on oil was reduced to a minimum during the second half of our Enancial year. It may seem strange perhaps that, as we have given up the

in this account, but I want you to bear MONUMENTAL DEPARTMENT, in mind what we say in the report about a good deal of the expenditure being on account of various concessions which the company owns and which your directors do not think it advisable to give up. for this fact. Until we are able to disor American Marble, Polished or Fine Puncheck pose of some our lands and our Mar Hongkong Granite. Lapoera Concessions in Borneo these accounts cannot be much further reduced. There are certain expenses in connection with the foreign and native staff as well as the rents which must be incurred as long as we hold them. This we would recommend should be done as we are con- vinced that they are of considerable value.

LOSSEN ON TIMBER REDUCED,

There is one other item in the working acconut to which I would draw your at tention, and that is the loss on timber which has been reduced from Tis. 31,485.56 last year to Tls, 2,550.62. This smajl losa is rather disappointing, as we had hoped. to have been in a position to show a profit from this source. Our installation at our timber yard in Ward Road is now

well equipped and able to turn out material of a very high class with which, in the opinion of our manager, we ran supply the building trade in Shanghai and the outports.

Our Damarlaut and Marbau woods are of excellent quality, nad wo shall sou have continuous supplies for doors, win- dow-frames, staircases, flooring, etc. If "any of our shareblders are thinking of building either bouses or offices. I hope they will ask their architects to specify that-Langkat Damarlaut or Marhau only is to be used by the contractors for the better class of work. We have in view several large contracts at the present time.

GIL PROSPECTS.

On the Dara: oilfield there has been no drilling done, during the last year, but preparations are being made by the Bataafsche Fetroleum Maatschappij (which is the company that does the field work of the AP.C. up) to do some deep drilling there and we shall look forward with a great deal of interest to

on

The profit of Tls. 108,004.36 on the rub- ber working account may, I think; be considered as satisfactory under the cir cumstances, as during several months of our financial year prices ruling were very low. With the prices which have been obtained

during the first five months of our present year beginning November 1st, and the present prospect for the! future, I think we may look forward to u good return this year on our rubber account. Our estimate for the current year is 1,000,000. No forward sales have been made. Our estates have con- tinued to be managed very ably and cur visiting agent reports everything in first- | rate order.

Why do you always tell everyone about Kensitas ? he says to me, sir. Because I consider it my duty, sir.

"Duty is the sublimest word in the English language, Jenkyn,” he says-and I believe him, he knows what's what, he smokes Kensitas himself."
