LABOUR PROPOSAL IN SYDNEY."

USE OF CITY PARKS

A proposal of the Labour aldermen that opportunities be provided for play- ing tennid on Sundays in the different parks of the city, caused a heated debate at the parks committee of the City Coun- cil ut Sydney recently.

The matter came before the committee As a reference from the City Council on Amacion-of-Alderman O'Brien (Labour) that facilities for Sunday tennis be pro- vided in the Observatory Park and the playground at Kent-street. On the sug gestion of Alderman McGuinness (vice- chairman) and other Labour alderman, Alderman O'Brien said he would make his motion refer to all the parks of the eith and that the facilities for Sunday tentis, befrom the hours of 1 o'clock to 8 o'clock, so as not to hurt the suscept ibilities of church-going people of any denDHIMELON

Alderman Marks (Reform) said the sition & difficult one. Daring the three years he was vice-chairman of the committee there were several requests for permission to play games in the parks of Sundays, and these always raised objec tions from the churches and the people who resided in the vicinity. The people of Camperdown were particularly strong in their objection, as they contended that they had the right to at least one day's quiet in the week.

Alderman McGuinness said as vice- ehuiruan be had to inform the committee that there were protests against the pro- posal on behalf of certain churches.

Alderman Jackson, M.LA. (Reform). said that what the aldermen considered was right personally for them to do on Sandaya was entirely different from the attitude they should" adopt as an ad- ministrative body in regard to this im portant question. Labour aldermen es- pecially should be very careful about introducing under their patronage_some- thing into Sydney that savoured very much of the Continental Sunday. If there were to be municipal facilities provided for Sunday games and Sunday amuse- ment in Sydney then there would be the necessity for additional Sunday labour. and there was no knowing where the matter would end. In any event, the City Counci: bad, as right to encourage officially in any way whatsoerer Sabbath desecration-

-Alderman English (Labour) said those were only puritanical and wowseristic ideas.

Alderman Jackson, said he did not mind being called either wowser" or puri- tanical this matter, as it was one on which he felt very seriously. He was a great believer in the fact that the British race was built up on the old English idea of true Sabbath observance and one day's rest in seven. If the City Council were going to provide cricket pitches, and ten- nis courts and football grounds and other facilities for Sunday games, it was a very serious matter, and one that would act as a bad example to the other councils in that State and in other parts of Aus- tralia. He did not believe in the Con- tinental Sunday, and

believed. be it would be very bad for the Corner wealth if it were introduced into Aus- tralia

Alderman Brooks (Reform) said that, whilst he did not object to private re- creation of a healthy nature on Sundays, as a City Council it must be careful not to set an example that would be bad for the city and bad for Australia. As a City Council it must take into conside ration the views of the citizens as a whole, and must remember that there were a great number of the citizens who regarded these Sunday games and Sun- day amusements with the greatest poss ible disfavour. There was no general demaad. from the citizens for those facilities for Sunday games, and the City. Council should be careful not to do any thing that would outrage public opinion or. hurt the religious feelings of the general community.

After further protesta hul been made, Alderman O'Brien said he would confine his motion, as originally intended. to the Observatory Park and Kent-street play ground, and would only ask that the pro- posal be given three months' trial, and then be reported on by the Town Clerk: In this amended form the proposal was carried by a majority vote as a recom→ mendation to the next meeting of the City Council.
