GOLF.
A NEW MEANS OF HEAD TRAINING.
During the winter, says & writer in a' Home paper, a good innny people seek to kiep in form for their week-end golf by pursuing some suyt of indoor prepara- tion. Even is it said that Sir Ernest. Holderness, the acuteur champion, oves his almost invariable confidence and no-" euracy in putting to daily practice on bis bedroom carpet.
For doing the thing thoroughly. how. ever, there is surely uobody to equal, a correspondent who sends me particulars of his scheme. He points out-and no- body seriously disputes this-that a prine essential of the true golf swing is to keep the hend still, so that the body may screw round at the hips instead of swaying
Thus inspired he has discovered what he regards as the only way of training the bead to retunin steady. In the room which he reserves for golf experiments an old straw hat is suspendel from the eiling directly over. the spot at which he takes his 'staner. Fron the brim of this bat bang therads four or ive inches long with a small bell (like the tinkling objects which children use on reins) at- Itached to the end of each throul.
These bells hang so that they cons pletely surround the head at just about the depth at which it cap would rast. Consequently he has only to sway a little and the bells tinkle; so that he knows he is wrong and must start again.
There may be an irresistible inclina- tion to think of him in terms of the cup and bells but he declares that the plan has cured him of lurching during the swing. And very likely it would be a help to any confried. Swayer who could bring himself to suffer the reined tor. ture of having bells ringing in his ears until he learnt to swing properly.”
After all, people, have suffered greater martyrdons in the cause of getting down to seratch. The late Tom Ball once told pupil of his at West Langashira who, r eure himself of gripping the club i much too tightly with the right hand, deliberately scorched the inside of that hand by catching held of a rokhať poker, After that bejeoüll not eri tightly.
HISTORICAL COLLECTION.
THE TREASURE" OF THE
GUELPHS."
Extradinary interest, wrote a Berlip correspondent of a London paper re- tenth, is being displayed both in German and foreign nit dealer circles in a valu
ble historical collection, known here as the Treasure of the Guelphs," somewhat after the fashion of the Treasure of the Sibelungs." The owper, who is selling, is the present Duke of Cumberland, the father of the ex-reigning Duke of Bruns- wick, who is husland of the ex-Kaiser's Jaughter, Princess Victoria Lorisé.
person.
It will be remembered that some time ago there were long negotiations with the Austrian Government converting voliec- tions in the Austrian castle at Gmunden. where the aged Duke now lives. These Austria refused to let pass out of the country. This time not the Austrian, but the Prussian Government, is in question. In the men at Hanover is a very fine collection of pictures, including a magni- vent Holbein.. It is the portrait of the investor of the House of Cumberland, and is reputed to be worth mans theusands, being judged one of Holbein's beat.
It is latinately believed, and con- staotly stated in Berlin, that behind the wealthy art dealer negotiating for this picture is the House of Windsor, repre- sented by King George in Metanir-readers.will recall how the father of the present Duke of Cumberland, when in London in the forties, grumbled at Queen Victoria for wearing jewels which he called "My tiara."; proving the un- setciell ownership of many of the trea- sures when one branch of the Hanover inns left Germany for England.
Besides objects which have à very real historie value for members of the British Royal Family, there are some Dürer paint- ings in this Hanoverian collection, and the fear that these may leave the country, too, is causing an agitation is nationally. ininded circles. It is urged that Prussia should follow Austria's good example. and close the frontiers to the would-be exportera of works of art that can never be replaced.

If Great Britain, instead of lending her money to foreign countries and in- dustries. would turn her attention to the wonderful heritage she possesses in the Southern Seas, she nerd have no fear of losing her money, as has been done in the past through loss to foreign countries. Sir Hugh Denison.
