A remarkable account of a cat burglar's career, was given at the Ok Bailey last month, when Robert Augustus Delaney, 29, an eagineer, pleaded guilty to burglary at the houses of the Duke of Rutland and of Lady Northcote.
He was sentenced to 3 years" penal servitude.

Mr. Clarke described how on January. 5th Delaney was foundi erouching under a bush in the Duke of Rutland's grounds when police officers went into the gar deas, and that following statements he made most of the property helunking to Lady Northcote was recovered. v
Detective-Sergeant Pearce said at Lady Northeote's house Delaney found a seated parcel containing wills and took them away, thinking it was money or jewellery. He wished to he taken into consideration cases of receiving a cheque-look which was found at his address and obtaining an overcoat at Peterborough. Another was obtaining 19 s. from a handlady in Dorset-atrret.

He had to sell it because. he did not understand farming and lost £15,000 in two years. He then went to Westcliff and purchased a boarding house for $1.800.-
In 192, he had a fire there and claimed 49.000 from, the insurance company, but received only £1
Sergeant Pearce said he communicated with the Lincolnshire police with regard to the statement purchasing a farm. and found that that story was not true. In is Delaney went to the Swineshead district and married. widow med Sharpe, who had inherited 2,000 from her late husband, and with that money a farm was purchased..
Delaney Eved with his wife for about three years. He thra sold the farm and furniture and eloped with his wife's niece to open a boardique-house at Westcliff. His wife now had to work for her living
