INDUSTRIES OF BRITAIN.

SIR A. GEDDES'S WARNING.

our over-

Sir Auckland Geddes, speaking at the annual dinner of the Dewsbury Chamber of Commerce on November 25th, em- phasised the need for a greater úcter- standing of our national economic posi tion, urged the importance of seas trade, and declared that exploiters of the people never prospered indefinite ly in Great Britain. Sir Auckland said the place where he lived, rearths South Coast in Kent, not far from the Sussex border, was "centuries ago the very heart and centre of the heavy woollen industry of England, while Sussex, where the first ironworks of England were establish, rose to fame throughout Europe and declined. “Now, when our ploughshares tear the soil, we turn up oid foundations; when wa go out. to cut bop-poles, we find the remn ants of factories. All the glory of the woollen trade, all the glory of the iron trade. have passed, and the wild things hold sway where crowded men once work ed." There was a great lesson in the passing of a trade, and it seented to him, once again, as before in the crowded history of our island. we were at the parting of the ways. Heaven forbid that any similar fate should overtake the great industrial districts of England as We knew them to-day. He thought that what was required was to see that our in- dustrial and commercial security wai maintained.

To-day we were faced by problems, cational problems, economic problems, more serious if we neglected them, per- haps, than those that could have ever faced the people of these islands, because, never before in all known history had we been so dependent on trade overseas, "It seems to me," said Sir Auckland. "that by far and away the greatest dan ger is the laternal danger, the danger that we as a people should forget that we are 3 people, should forget that our interests are one interest in the last analysis, should forget that no class can prosper really if its prosperity is secur ed only by the exploitation of others." He thought that at the present time there was nothing so important in our national life as that we should try how we could gain the great understanding of our econo- mic position as a nation; that we should try to get that understanding spread widely among the people. There was no doubt that all of us were suffering to some extert, perhaps cot relatively but still to scuze extent, and Jome very severely, through limitations that were: imposing themselves upon our export trade through the very high costs of pro- duction. Men to whom he spoke some- times said, that does cot concern us; | we are not in the foreign, trade."

Believe me," said Sir Auckland, "we are all in the foreign trade, whether wo ke it or rot. There is absolutely no one single person in Great Britain whose life, whose comfort, whose prosperity is directly or indirectly, wholly our overacas commercial activities." At the present moment, in many sections of our foreign trade, the cost of production was so high that we were barely holding our OWA. He ventured to suggest to them as & Chamber of Trade that, they should examine the activities of a "non-party. non-political organisation in which be was interested in this extent that he was chairmar f it, and he found it a very absorb undertaking. That or ganisation was the Central Council of the Economic League, and it was called that because throughout the country there. were local leagues whose business it was to disseminate as widely a might be economic information and education so that the people of the country might have the facts before them,

We Dist always keep in mind our position as a nation, never forgetting our dependence on the trade overseas, Sir Auckland added that he was not pessimistic-fär from it. (Cheers.)

A good old English Custom

Keeping the port travelling round the table is an old custom still maintained by a few English clubs-like Kensitas Cigarettes, sir, always passing round good company.

The soft, mellow-smoking qualities of Kensitas Cigarettes make you want to keep on enjoying them, and the last smoke is as good as the first, because all Kensitas are

as good as really good cigarettes can be."
