YARN.
The beavy competition by which Indian Yarn is being gradually supplanted, chiedy by Chinese Yarn and partly by the Japanese article, has been most mark- ed this year. The total clearances for the year under review, as will be seen below, ure about half of last year, a most deplorable state for the trade, which at one time assumed such dimensions as to be one of the chief imports of the Colony: A good demand prevailed in the begin- ning of the year, in consequence of which little business was done. This demand lasted for only a few weeks, after which the market fall into a spell of quietness and utter stagnation, which has been very conspicuous through the year. An irregular demand of small extent would crop up now and then, but this demand would be for dealers' immediate require ments when they were more or less com pelled to bay.
