BARRISTERS AND THEIR WIGS.
That the Presidency of Woodrow Wilson should spread the fame of wigs Beers an irrational sequence of cause ard effect. But there is no doubt of the faci. To President Wilson the world OWES the scheme of the League of Nations, from the League of Nations came the Interrational Court of Justice, new established at The Hague, and the English barristers pleading below that Court bave just been instructed by the Bar Council that they must wear their wigs Thus, it is thought, they will in press the litigating nations with the dig nity of the English Bar. We can yell believe it, for in these degenerate days to mar, outside the British mire ever dreams of wearing a wig-except to atone for the omissions of Nature. The wig which is not imitative, but an official vestment, the poor alien knows not. We do not doubt that our barristers at The Hague will corvine him that it adds much to the authority of the advocate. It is only fair that the English lawyer, who has to cope with rivals in scarlet robes and saintly headgear, should show them that he also has his ancient pomp. Not that the wig is of immemorial anti- quity There is no inevitable nasocia tion between law and wigs. The lawyers only took to the wig when everybody else wore it, but, being professionally prone to be governed by precedent, could rot take it off when the rest of the world did. The old joke has it that the Bar went into mourning at the death of Queen Anne ard never came out again." Some. where about that time the black gown and the wig became the fashion, and since then the Bar has used no other. In the year 1705 Queen Anne gave the great seal to Lord Cowper. He looke very young."ard wearing his own hair made him appear yet more so; which the Queen observing, obliged him to cut it! off. telling him the world would say she had given the Seals to a boy." When he appeared in a wig people did not know him. He was the last Lord Chan- cellor who never wore a wig at the Bar. In those days the only wear for people Queer of importarce was the perisig. Ante was furious when one of her. Ministers appeared before her in a small. his tie-wig: Next time. I suppose,
" So lordship will come in his night-exp. the Judges and Queen's Counsel put on full-bottomed wigs, while the stuff gowns. men were contert with a moderate tie." When George III. came to the throne in 1760, men began to wear their own hair again. By the end of the century paly the clergymen, the doctors, and the law. yers still kept their wigs on. The doctors soot gave it up. The bishops, stood out longer. Archbishop Howley, who died in 1848, always wore a wig. Archbishop Sumner was seed in a wig At the wedding of the late Empress Frederick i 18:38. That seems to have been the 1st official appearance of a wig on an episcopal head. But who cro foresee the day when legal heads will go bare It has been said that lawyers are lways Toric. This is clearly confirmed by their devotion to wigs.-DaRy Tele- graph.
