The boycott is not an Irish invention. Something like it existed in all European countries in the days of religious bigoiries and persecutions. But since we in Scot- land gave up "hating one another for the love of God there has been no ·rganised social persecution by or of any section of the community. To Treland belongs the uncariable distinction of having employed the boycott as a political engine. To the essentially democratic mind of the Scot the political boycott seems the most flagrant contradiction of the principles of political freedom expressed in popular suffrage and the secrecy of the ballot. It is resurgent anarchiama particularly mean and ernel manifestation mob-law. That it should have raised its ugly haud in a Scottish county is a phenomenon which must be regarded by all true Scots with feelings of shame and also of anxiety. We are glad that the Socialist leaders in Linlithgowshire are outspokenly decouncing the organised persecutions whereby some of their sup- porters are expressing their chagrin over the result of the election in the cou- stituency. Socialism would be

worse thing than we hold it to be if its supporters were to resort" generally to methods which savour of Gulway. Like the rowdyism displayed at many of the election meetings, this outburst of social spite and smallmindedness illustrates the inevitable infection of constitutional " Socialism with the Communist spirit of violence.

I.L.P. MEMBERS FROM SCOTLAND...

The Independent Labour Party put for ward at the 1-etion 86candidates for whoa, it was financially responsible. OE these 26 wire elected. Eleven were won in Scotland, leaving ouly 15 for the rest of the country. The successi al 11 in Scotland were Mr. Wheatley. Mr. M'Neill Weir, Mr. Neil Maclean, Mr Maxton, Mr. Camp bell Stephen, Mr. William Graham, the Rer. James Barr, Mr. Bosslyn, Mr. Mitchell, Mr. Wright, Mr. J. Stewart, and Mr. Hardie:" No fewer than 24 LLP. candidates were defeated in Scotland. The above list of successful members of the LLP. does not include those who contested and won seats under trade union and local auspices.

BAPTISM IN THE CAYFT.

In the presence of members of the family and private friends, the christening of the eight months old son of Mr and Mrs. Ian Macpherson took place in the Crypt of the Hoose of Commons. Thus ends a long controversy, which has excited considerable public interest, as to the right of a member of Parliament to bare his infant christened in the Crypt according to the rites of the Scottish Church. Six months ago, when the ceremony was contemplated, Canon Carnegie, Chaplain of the House of Com- mons; claimed jurisdiction over the Crypt, and contended that only a clergyman of the Church of England could be permitted to officiate. There were prolonged inquiries into ecclesiastic authority, and the ques tion was raised in the House of Commons. Finally the Lord Great Chamberlain issued his authority for the christening to take. place. The ceremony was performed by the Rev.
