Mr. Taylor, who won his first R. and A. medal a dozen years ago, shortly after he became a member, has every right to be gratified with his success. The field included golfers whose names weight, Mr. Roger Wothered among them, and Mr. Taylor is fifty-five. On these card days he is often there or there- abouts, and four years ago he won the second medal. "There is no greater enthusiast, to keeper student of the game than Mr. Taylor. Sixteen years ago be was runner-up in the Amateur Cham-

pionship, and his home green is Mid- Surrey.

THE GOLF BALL PROBLEM,

The most interesting topic discussed at the half-yearly meeting of the Royal and Ancient at St. Andrew's was the report of the Committee on the vexed question of the size and weight of the golf ball; but it was disappointing to learn that experiments both in America and this country have once more proved a nego tive." They tried the effect of balls con- structed with solid centres, and found that such balls could" be driven, if any thing, a little farther than balls of the same manufacture already on the market, but that they were appreciably. Iess pleasant to hit. It was demonstrat-

Prior to their visit to Glasgow the Northerners had been defeated five times in seven engagements and were generally regarded as one of the disap- pointing teains of the season. Play was more than strenuous, ollen exciting, but never elevating or satisfying. and it was regrettable that two competitors allowed their feelings to dominate play. Airdrieonians won by goal scored by their inside left, M'Phail, early in the second half, and on what football was shown in the game the cham- pions were due to be beaten. The climax was reached when Cairns, the Rangers' captain, was dismissed by the referee. Hibernian continue to do well Heart of Midlothian also advanced by defeating Hamilton Academicals on the latter's ground, an excellent tonic for the Tyne- castle side.

In another holiday match Rangers wore I out against Hearts and won well. Celtic, also, as might be expected, were more successful than Cowdenbeath. And Queen's Park disappointed their follow- ers by their appearance at Aberdeen.
