FIRE STATION, BUILDING. Tenders for the erection of the super- structure were invited on July 11th, to be submitted by July 25th. The tenders wore checked, the necessary contract documents prepared and a contract was entered into on August 25th with Mesurs. Trollope Colls (Far East), · Ltd.. amounting to $935,808.26. Building operations cannot be commenced immed- iately on a contract of this magnitude, as the contractors require a reasonable time to arrange for materials and plant. Satisfactory progress has been made and plant, consisting of concrete mixers, elevators and cranes have been deliver ed, while consignments of materials- broken stone, sand, cement. bricks and timber have been deposited on the site The levels and setting out of_the_build." ing have been checked and work is pro- ceeding on the assembling and erection of the plant, and on the fixing of the wood ensing for the concreting to the stanchions.
QUEEN'S PIER-ENTRANCE
PORTION.
The progress with this contract is un- satisfactory. The contractors (Messrs. You Hing & Co.) do not appear to be making any serious effort to carry out their obligations under the contract in a business like manner, and their assur ances, given from time to time, to ex- pedite the work have never been fulfill- ed.
The date of completion of the contract was June 30th; however, in view of alleged difficulties the contractors have had to contend with in regard to the stonë masons-but from the responsibility for which the contractors cannot be en- tirely absolved-an extension of time without penalty was granted until Octo- ber 4th, on the contractors assurance that the work would be completely finish. ed by the latter date.
A slight improvement-though still slow-was shown in carrying out the rtorks, during the months of July and August, but even this rate of progress. was not maintained during the month of September, and work was completely suspended from 19th to 2nd inclusive.
Work on the fixing of the tiles to the roof of the pier was also suspended from August 1st to 7th, while, at various times, difficulties have been experienced in "ob- taining and delivering granite from the quarry.
Enquiries have been made, into the causes of these delaya, and from infor- mation obtained, it would appear that in all cases the contractors have failed to fulfil their assurances in regard to financial matters.TAWA There has been no delay in providing drawings from this office, as they had been completed before tenders were in- vited, while copies of each were handed to the contractors at the time the con- tract was signed on March 22nd, 1923.
During the period of testing the foun- dations by Mr. Duncan's office, the con- tractors had eight months to prepare stone at the quarry, and have had nine months since commencing actual building operations On the site a period of

seventeer months which is more than . E. WARREN & CO.,
reasonable for carrying out à contract of this type.
The work at present is not quite com. pleted up to the level of the crown of the arches, and the value of the work done to date is approximately equal to half the value of the total contraet.
"The question of cancelling this con tract has bech carefully considered-and though another contractor would prob- j ably carry out the work with more ex- pedition, there would be a suspension of the work during the period required to adjust the prices and fix up a new con-
tract, and as these negotiations might of a protracted nature the final date
bo
of completion would probably be later then by continuing under the present conditions, assuming that the present rate of progress although slow be main- tained.
ERECTION ON EXISTING FOUNDA TIONS OF BONHAM KOAD SCHOOL
The contract for the above building, was signed on April 11th last and until recently the work has been seriously, de- layed by the dificulty of obtaining facing bricks in sullicicat quantities. Within the limits which this difficulty "enforced the contractor has made every effort by the erection of workshops, preparation of frames and joinery, etc., to carry on with the work Orders were placed for facing bricks with manufacturers in Canton and Amoy, and although regular delivery in sufficient quantities was pro mised to the contractor small consign- ments only of from 5,000 to 10,000 were delivered at long intervals and, during the first five months of the contract time a total of about 40,000 only were deliver- ed out of 600,000 required. It was clearly impossible to rely on these sources of supply any longer,
Early in September enquiries were made and samples obtained by the Architectural Office from local agents for the supply of Formosa bricks and the contractor entered into a contract with the Mitsui Busan Kaisha for the supply of 600,000 facing bricks. The first half of this quantity was delivered on Sep- tember 92nd, the bricks were of good quality and colour and well packed in straw, the balance will be delivered when required at one month's notice. The con- tractor immediately placed a large staff: of bricklayers on the work and already considerable progress has been made.
