THE ROMANCE OF RUBBISH.

Mr. James A. Young, in Chambers's Journal tells its of many of the ways in which the modern manufacturer and the sewentific chemist, in combination, have turned things that were formerly the most worthless waste of the factory into valuable sources of proft and employ- ment. There is, in fact, no such thing as rubbish nowadays, he says, and the catalogue which he gives is impressive evidence; though one cannot escape an uneasy feeling now and then that ingeni- ous substitution can be carried too far.

A well-known Midlothian Brm of paper, manufacturers bas perfected a procoss for making from various waste products of the company's mills a material called fashurite, which can be used instead af in vulcanite or ebonite, and which is some ways superior to them for electrical work.

A sharp-witted American has dis-" covered a silver mine in the waste pro ducts of the big cinema studios. Four ounces or more of silver are used in the making of every film, and until quite recently two of those ounces went into the sowers when the film was completed. Now the silver is recovered and. sent to the mint to be turned into dollars.

Time was when the cotton-grower looked upen the carton seed as an in- sufferable nuisance, to be got rid of at trouble and expense. It has become now, through chemistry, the basis of a whole catalogue of activities known as the cot ton-seed oil industries.

Sawdust, too, has a romance of its own." The one-time despised particles of saw- dust are now more valuable than solid timber. By the use of hydraulic pressure and intense heat the particles are formed into a solid mass capable of being moulded into any shape and of receiving a brilli- ant polish. An inventor has also dis covered how sawdust can be utilised to make artißcial wood. A mixture consist ing of sawdust, together with chalk and some chemicals is subjected to very heavy pressure, and the result is a substance possessing all the qualities of real timber. It

ona be planed,

sawed and sub- pared, nailed. painted, stained, or mited to every process of carpentry or manufacture to which real wood is sub- jeeted. It will not deteriorate in water, and on account of the chemicals it con tains is impervious to rat.

Mufichester scientist has discovered that, by mixing leather-waste with a small percentage of rubber, and vulcanis- ing by means of the new process; a new leather, which the inventer claims to be two and a half times as durable as ordine ary leather, is produced at about one- third of the cost,"

THE WORLD THEATRE. Exciting and interesting incidents char- acterized the filming of the forest fire scenes in the latest Harry Bapt produc tion, Lucretia Lombard," the adapta tion of the Kathleen Norris" best seller," starring Irene Rich and Monte Blue. When the fire was actually staged, it took on such huge proportions and burned and raged so fiercely that the company was afraid it would spread and cause disaster to the countryside. So real was this fire,

that thousands of small wild animals were

Hundreds who have seen "Monte Cristo in the Coronet Theatre during the last two days will bear ready testi mony to the superlative merits of this great pictare. Taking one of the most wonderful stories over written, the pro- ducers have made a film excelled by few. for sheer fascinating appeal. But besides its superb romance, Monte Cristo remarkable for its historical accuracy and for its faithfulness to Alexandre Dumas famous narrative. Such fow concessions as have been made to screen technihue are hardly noticed and the film sweeps forward with all the magnificant force and glamour of the words that came from Dumas' pen, capturing the imagination as completely as does the book. However, ati immortal story is not the only claim that "Monte Cristo makes for praise; is boasts besides some splendid
