EXHIBITION FELLOWSHIP.

£10,000 FOR SCHOLARSHIPS.

Empire scholarships to the value of £10,000 will shortly be available, as a result of the success of the Fellowship of the British Empire Exhibition. Up to date receipts from subscriptions of mem- bers reach in round figures £50,000. This represents a total membership of nearly $3,000 Fellows When the scholarship scheme was first faunched it was hoped that at least 10 per cent. of the revenue could be devoted to educational purposes. As the audited neccunts show, this expect abien has been more than realised matead of 19 per cent there is about 20 per cent. available.

There are now being added to the scholarship fand donations from various” sources, including the Kensington College 8,550 the Thomas Wall Trust, Miss A. Fiocchi, Mrs. LG. Hannam, Miss F. M. Stud- 340 bolme, and others. It is expected that further spesial donations will be received. and there is also a reasonable anticipa tion of a good addition to the scholarship fund from the associate branch of the fellowship which has now been instituted. A White Government Paper, entitled Steamship Subsidies," shows that in the financial year ended 1924 the net charge on the Exchequer in respect of payments for foreign and colonial services was £170.553. Of this amount £254,878 was for overseas services, £125.875 for crosSS- Channel services. and £80,000 was payable to the Cunard Steamship Co., for maintaining of a ship of approved speed and rights of pre-emption or hire of all the Company's ships." The vessel of "approved speed' is the Mauretania. Amongst the sums for overseas services there is: P. and O. Steam Navigation Co.-Letter and parcel mails between the United Kingdom and India, China and Australia, under contract terminable at two years' notice, £232,500.

At the end of March prices had declined and during May were reduced to 141d. June, how. ever, saw a substantial advance, 17id being quoted. Afterwards the year, c. market showed firmness and the price advanced to 18 d. in September, and reached the highest value of the year at the end of November, ic..21.000. Rattan and Fibre Furniture.--Values of exports closely approximated tha 1999 figure of £185,000. The U.S.A. and the Straits Settlements were the largest buyers.

Soy.-Prices during the whole year ware about 323.50 per cask, with, slight Auctuations and little demand from Europe. The U.S.A. absorbed half the output £35,000- worth,

The total exports to England and the Continent amounted to: about 22,000 piculs, valued at £88,000, and about 53,000 picals were shipped to America; valued at £108,000, which figures represent about seven times the total quantity shipped in the pre- vious year:
